Two of the UK's top transplant hospitals have placed patients in danger by utilizing a heart device that is suspected to be associated with increased mortality compared to an alternative product, according to new information.

The NHSexpressed worries about the device in 2018, with half of those who received it passing away within three years.

Nevertheless, the Freeman Hospital based in Newcastle andLondon'S Harefield kept using the pump.

The company, Medtronic, discontinued the product in 2021 due to safety concerns. It also mentioned an issue where the pumps experienced delays or failed to resume operation after being turned off.

Both medical facilities knew that their top heart specialists served as paid advisors for the equipment's producer, theBBC reported.

A 2019 initial review by the NHS found that out of 119 patients who were given the Medtronic device, 54 had passed away within two years.

On the other hand, 15 of the 97 patients who were given the Abbott pump passed away during the same time frame.

The apparatus, available for patients who might be awaiting a transplant or are not suitable for one, assists the heart in circulating blood throughout the body.

Greg Marshall, a physically fit and healthy individual with aspirations to enlist in the Royal Marines, was among those who received a Medtronic implant in 2019 following a severe heart failure episode.

He received the Medtronic device from Freeman Hospital, several months following the availability of the NHS dataset.

Greg consented to the operation but experienced a stroke as a result of a major complication. He had a stroke and lost mobility on the left side of his body, with his speech being severely affected.

While recovering slowly, the heart device abruptly stopped functioning in July 2020 and did not restart when he attempted to power it back on.

He was taken to the hospital, but the device could not be repaired and stayed within him after he was denied additional surgery, fearing another stroke.

His heart kept working, and he was added to a transplant list.

Nevertheless, in September 2023, he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest and passed away at the age of 26.

"It came as a huge surprise to all of us," said his mother, Tessa Marshall.

She mentioned that they were not informed about the long-term dangers and that a current patient was brought in to share the advantages of it.

"I regret not conducting more research," Ms. Marshall said.

The family stated that the healthcare professional overseeing Greg's treatment, Prof Stephan Schueler, failed to inform them about his financial ties with Medtronic, despite it being a requirement set by the doctor's regulatory body, the General Medical Council (GMC).

Professor Schueler stated, "There was no financial motivation or salary agreements with Medtronic for me or any member of our team to favor one device over another."

Another medical center, the Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge, decided on its own to discontinue the use of the Medtronic device in February 2018, choosing instead to employ a different pump following the findings from two controlled studies.

Nevertheless, Harefield Hospital remained the only facility using the Medtronic device until early 2021.

The Freeman Hospital operated until June 2021, when it was taken off the market 'for the sake of patient safety'.

The regulatory body, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, kept granting approval for the device's use, although it had not been notified by the NHS about the 2019 data.

Data obtained through the Freedom of Information Act showed that from October 2018 to June 2021, the death rate associated with the Medtronic device was 2.5 times greater than that of the Abbott device.

Forty-nine percent of individuals who received the Medtronic device during that period passed away within three years, compared to 19 percent of those who received the Abbott device in the same time frame.

Both medical facilities stated that their choice to keep using the pump was due to 'complicated clinical judgments,' noting there was 'no definitive evidence' at that moment to suggest Abbott's equipment was less effective than Medtronic's.
