Macron Strengthens Indian Ocean Push with Mauritius Alliance
French and Mauritian leaders have reconfirmed their intentions to restore relations and enhance collaboration, highlighting their "historic and friendly connections" and a "firm dedication to the Indian Ocean" as President Emmanuel Macron commenced his five-day visit to the island.
The visit, which started on Thursday, marks the first official trip to Mauritius by a French president in more than 30 years. Paris considers the country a key neighbor due to its close location to the French overseas territory of Réunion Island.
French President Macron and Prime Minister of Mauritius Navin Ramgoolam mentioned they addressed various "significant topics," such as collaboration between universities, energy, and water supply and security.
They also tackled the ongoing conflict regarding Tromelin Island, a small isletadministered by Francebut asserted by Mauritius. Macron stated "this matter should not serve as a point of contention".
President Macron embarks on a five-day trip to Africa, aiming to establish new alliances.
As per Ramgoolam, the discussions were "honest and transparent," and Macron stated that "this matter should not lead to division."
The duo also addressed political instability in nearby Madagascar.
For the first time, Macron openly stated that France would back the nation'spolitical transition"with a mindset of openness" and a strong focus on assisting the Malagasy population, especially via growth initiatives, employment generation, and anti-graft measures.
Ramgoolam expressed his approval, stating he "fully backs the initiatives of France and the strategy implemented by the European Union, the African Union, and the Southern African Development Community to restore stability on the island as soon as possible."

Macron's programme in Mauritiuscontinued on Friday with a voyage to sea, visiting the French Navy ship Champlain, which engages in collaborative maritime monitoring operations with the Mauritian coastguard and supports regional collaboration in maritime security.
Talks regarding the battle against human trafficking and unlawful fishing are also included in the schedule.
On Friday morning, Macron also opened a new French Embassy in Port Louis, then traveled to South Africa for a series of one-on-one discussions prior to the G20 summit.
He is set to have short discussions with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, followed by a ceremony to honor French citizens who opposed apartheid.
In the evening, the French president is scheduled to attend the unveiling of aFranco-South African Business Councilto enhance economic collaborations between businesses in both nations, using a pre-established framework between France and Nigeria.
South Africa's leadership of the G20 aims to enhance Africa's influence on the global stage.
Afterward, Macron will go to Gabon, where the Élysée states he will "confirm and strengthen" the "excellent, renewed, and future-oriented" ties between the two nations.
This will mark the French president's initial official trip to Libreville since Brice Oligui Nguema assumed leadership.
His tour of Africa will end next week in Luanda, Angola, with aEuropean Union-African Union summit, where leaders will review the advancements achieved since the previous combined summit in 2022.
