A senator from Delta North, Ned Nwoko, has rejected assertions made by his former wife, Regina Daniels, that he wed her when she was 17, calling the accusations "false, misleading, and harmful."
In a message shared through his social media platforms on Thursday, Nwoko stated that the rumors were efforts to damage his reputation during his current marital issues with the Nollywood actress.
"I have learned that false statements are being spread by Regina, claiming that I married her when she was 17 years old. These statements are completely false and misleading," Nwoko said.
He mentioned that during their initial meeting, Regina informed him that she was 21 years old and provided an Independent National Electoral Commission voter's card as evidence, which listed her date of birth as October 10, 1998.
For clarity, during my initial meeting with Regina, I inquired about her age, and she stated that she was 21 years old. I then asked if she had any documentation to verify this, and she showed me her INEC voter's card, which clearly indicates that she was born on October 10th, 1998.
"I told her I would keep this document with me, and I have done so ever since," he said.
Nwoko mentioned that their wedding occurred six years back, stating that according to all confirmed documents, Regina is now 27 years old.
"Based on all confirmed records, our wedding occurred six years ago, meaning Regina is 27 now. Any claim that I married her at 17 is untrue and should not be believed by the public," he said.
The legislator also claimed that his wife's statements were affected by her "current mental state," mentioning that she had begun but not finished treatment for substance abuse.
"The facts are confirmable and undeniable. Until this is addressed, I recommend the public to carefully examine all her statements, particularly considering her present mental state, which includes a history of starting and then discontinuing rehabilitation for illegal drug addiction," Nwoko stated.
PUNCH Online previously stated that Nwoko had alleged a "syndicate of pull-down-Ned" group was using his marital difficulties to harm his public image.
The conflict between Nwoko and Regina Daniels intensified on Sunday when the actress confessed to using illegal drugs, claiming her ex-husband introduced her to them for his sexual pleasure.
In reply, Nwoko rejected the claim, stating that it was Regina's brother, Sammy, who introduced her to drugs and hindered every attempt at her recovery.
The couple's disagreement comes after several weeks of online interactions and public comments regarding claims of domestic violence, which Nwoko has repeatedly denied, blaming her actions on substance abuse.
He mentioned that Regina's "ongoing struggle with drug addiction" has put pressure on their relationship and once again urged her to seek treatment.
The dispute escalated when Regina's brother, Sammy Daniels, was taken into custody in Lagos, moved to Abuja, presented in court, and subsequently held in detention until his bail requirements were met.
Amid the stress, the actress recently revealed that her parents, who had been separated for many years, had come back together following her family's crisis, especially her brother's arrest.
