Summit University, Offa, is hosting the 'largest Artificial Intelligence gathering' in Africa, with over 500 AI researchers, scholars, tech entrepreneurs, and policymakers in attendance.
The event, tagged IndabaX Nigeria 2025, will also feature the official commissioning of the Fourth Generation of AI systems developed by the university in collaboration with tech partners, as part of its broader commitment to cutting-edge research and digital innovation in Africa.
Over 30 tertiary institutions within and across the country are participating in the three day event which is holding in the university campus.
Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Abiodun Musa Aibinu, said the summit represents a critical turning point for Nigeria and the continent at large.
'This is the largest gathering of AI scholars and enthusiasts in Nigeria and one of the biggest on the continent. It is about building the future of Africa using African minds and solutions,' he said while addressing journalists in Offa.
According to him, 'We are in the fourth industrial revolution which is the age of cyber-physical systems. AI is advancing towards autonomy and it will soon surpass human intelligence in all domains, so we should be ready'.
Aibinu, a professor of Mechatronics Engineering specialising in AI and Machine Vision, dispelled public fears of job displacement, stressing that AI serves as a catalyst for job creation and economic growth.
'Most people think AI will send people out of jobs, but the truth is, it is creating more opportunities. Just as computers did not erase typists or how GSM expanded opportunities in telecoms, AI is opening new spaces in cybersecurity, ICT, and more,' he said.
He argued that Nigeria, like other nations, must embrace the Fourth Industrial Revolution powered by AI, robotics, and cyber-physical systems, adding that ICT-driven platforms like app stores now generate more revenue than oil and gas globally.
The Vice Chancellor also highlighted how AI can help solve real-time local challenges in agriculture, security, trade, and governance.
'With technologies like drones and machine vision, we can track criminal activity, monitor farms, and manage resources with precision. AI is the naked truth of our time. It is here to stay and it is here to help,' he said.
Themed around the democratization of knowledge, ethical AI development, and innovation for African communities, the IndabaX Nigeria 2025 summit is expected to serve as a critical platform for cross-border collaboration among academia, industry, and public institutions.
Speaking on the conference vision, Chairperson of the Steering Committee, Mr Ahmed Olanrewaju, described the summit as Africa's premier convergence of AI minds.
'IndabaX Nigeria provides a space for dialogue on AI policies, technical exchange, and solution building,' he said.
In her remarks, the Chairperson of the Local Organising Committee, Mrs Ganiyat Afolabi-Yusuf, noted that the event is designed not just for learning but also for implementation.
'It is not just a conference. It is a laboratory for African solutions to African problems,' she said.
The summit will feature paper presentations, exhibitions, workshops, and discussions focused on the role of Artificial Intelligence in shaping Africa's technological and economic future.
