What appear to be two different front pages of Kenya's Standard newspaper are circulating on social media, claiming that former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua is radicalising young people against president William Ruto. But both images are fake.
Kenya's former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua is radicalising young members of the Kikuyu community in an attempt to fracture national unity for political gain. At least, that's according to what appear to be two front pages of Kenya's Standard newspaper.
The first image resembles the 30 June 2025 front page of the Standard newspaper and has the headline: "Rigathi's Dangerous Plot: Radicalizing Kikuyu Youth Against Ruto."
A summary below the headline claims that Gachagua is "weaponizing" community frustrations and "risks destabilizing national unity and dragging the region back into the dark politics of fear and division".
The second image appears to show the front page of the 2 July 2025 issue of the newspaper and shows the headline: "Beware Gachagua's Ethnic Trap."
The summary paragraph here warns the community against falling for Gachagua's "dangerous narrative claiming they are targets of ethnic cleansing within president Ruto's administration".
"Gachagua is radicalising Kikuyu youth to fracture national unity for his own gain," it adds.
Gachagua is a Kikuyu, a community that mainly lives in the country's central region. It is the largest ethnic community in the country and therefore wields considerable electoral influence, as Kenyans have long voted along ethnic lines.
Gachagua strives to be recognised as the de facto leader of Mount Kenya region, referring to areas around central Kenya traditionally inhabited by the Kikuyu, Embu and Meru communities.
The vote-rich region overwhelmingly voted for current president William Ruto in the 2022 elections. Gachagua was his running mate.
Gachagua served as Kenya's deputy president from 2022 until his impeachment in October 2024 following a fallout with Ruto. The president and his allies accused him of corruption, inciting ethnic divisions and undermining the government.
Gachagua in turn has mobilised opposition in a bid to unseat Ruto in the upcoming 2027 elections.
But were the allegations about him radicalising young people actually published by the Standard? We checked.
Altered front pages
Africa Check found that both front pages originated from the Facebook page called Daily Standard. This page has posted dozens of fake front pages that mimic the design of the Standard newspaper, which strongly suggests that these viral images cannot be trusted.
The Standard newspaper usually posts digital versions of its front pages on its verified social media accounts, including Facebook and X, as well as on its epaper platform. We searched these accounts and the platform and found the original issues.
The original front page for the 30 June issue has the headline: "No, thank you!" It discusses objections from top police bosses to a controversial shoot-to-kill order.
The original 2 July issue has the headline "Blood money" and discusses what it describes as the government's lack of respect for human life. This follows the government's decision to waive hospital bills for some victims of police brutality and to provide compensation to families, instead of being accountable and delivering justice.
The versions doing the rounds on social media have been altered.
