The project, driven by Nestlé Pure Life, employs a holistic water stewardship model built upon three fundamental pillars: Educate, Protect, and Restore. Over the past decade, this initiative has demonstrably improved both the quantity and quality of local water resources, while simultaneously enhancing biodiversity and bolstering the livelihoods of the communities that depend on the canal. Its success has been recognized nationally, with the site recently being selected as a pilot location for Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs), highlighting its importance as a blueprint for sustainable freshwater conservation within Thailand.

Water quality has increased substantially, creating a more hospitable environment for aquatic life. The return and flourishing of clam populations, along with various fish species previously absent from the canal, are clear indicators of a restored local food chain and a renewed ecological balance, both of which are crucial for sustaining biodiversity in the area."

The Nestlé Waters Cares for Water project, launched in 2015, is rooted in the principle of conducting business in a way that benefits both society and the environment. Its success is built upon a comprehensive, sustainable water stewardship model that revolves around three key pillars:
1. Educate: Fostering Awareness and Knowledge
The initiative began with the Youth Water Guardian project, a school competition designed to promote water conservation awareness among students in Ayutthaya. Saklee Witthaya School was chosen as the initial pilot site. Recognizing the need for a dedicated learning space, Nestlé established the Nestlé Waters Cares for Water Learning Center at the school in 2018. This center serves as a hub for knowledge-sharing and integrated conservation practices. In celebration of the project's 10th anniversary, the center underwent an upgrade to incorporate biodiversity education alongside its existing water stewardship curriculum.
2. Protect: Preventing Waste and Promoting a Circular Economy
To minimize waste and safeguard water sources, Nestlé launched the Community Waste Market in collaboration with Wongpanit. This initiative provides local residents with an opportunity to convert recyclable waste into income. To date, over 16 tonnes of waste have been collected through this program. Furthermore, a waste bank was established at Saklee Witthaya School to further promote recycling, encourage circular economy practices, and generate income for students and the broader community.
3. Restore: Enhancing Water Quality and Biodiversity
Recognizing the importance of a thriving ecosystem, Nestlé initiated the Nestlé Rak Nam Releasing Fish into the Canal program. This involved the construction of conservation ponds and the introduction of native fish species, including the Armed Spiny Eel, Spotted Spiny Eel, Indian Loach, and Whisker Sheatfish. In addition, aquatic plants such as Water Horn Nut, Water Primrose, Water Lily, and Pandan Leaves were introduced to further enhance the canal's ecosystem. To commemorate the 10th anniversary, 100,000 giant freshwater prawn larvae were released into the canal, further enriching local biodiversity.
A Collaborative Effort: Partnerships for a Sustainable Future
Over the past decade, the Nestlé Waters Cares for Water project has fostered strong collaborative relationships with various stakeholders, including schools, local communities, and both public and private sector partners. Key partners include the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONEP), the Royal Irrigation Department, the Department of Fisheries, the WWF Thailand Foundation, Wongpanit, and Phranakhon Si Ayutthaya Rajabhat University. These partnerships have been instrumental in the successful restoration and sustainable management of the Khanom Jeen canal's ecosystem.
"The canal's water quality has improved dramatically," emphasized a Nestlé representative. "Local villagers are now able to engage in traditional fishing practices and cultivate aquatic plants, providing them with a sustainable source of income. The canal has also been restored to its original function as a vital waterway for the community. Through this project, Nestlé Waters has achieved 100% water regeneration, ensuring that all the water used in our drinking water business is replenished back into nature and the community. By the end of this year, we anticipate having regenerated over one million cubic metres of water."
The project's recent recognition as a pilot site for the international OECMs standard represents a significant milestone in Thailand's national biodiversity conservation efforts, extending beyond traditionally protected areas.
Looking Forward: Continued Commitment to Water Stewardship
The next phase of the Nestlé Waters Cares for Water project will concentrate on strengthening biodiversity within the Khanom Jeen canal and empowering local communities to take ownership of conservation efforts. Plans are underway to expand the project to encompass more villages at both ends of the canal, thereby extending its reach and impact. By maintaining its unwavering focus on the three pillars of Educate, Protect, and Restore, the project aims to ensure the long-term sustainability of Thailand's vital water resources.
