Accra, Sept. 20, GNA — The Ajet-Nasam and family have donated assorted food items and supplies to the Krachi Prisons in the Oti Region as part of efforts to demonstrate the love of Christ and support the welfare of inmates.

The donation, which included 20 bags of rice, 200 pieces of toiletries, corn dough, cassava dough, liquid soap, three gallons of oil, and skin ointment creams, was made to improve the living conditions of the 245 inmates currently housed at the facility.

Presenting the items, Mr. John Ajet-Nasam, speaking on behalf of his family, underscored their commitment to supporting the Krachi Prisons and helping to create opportunities for inmates to reform and reintegrate.

“Just recently, we responded to a request for five computers by donating computers and other resources for the female prison inmates,” he said.

“We also provided DStv facilities to aid their education and entertainment. If the technical facilities are in place, my family will be ready to support with the necessary tools and materials to ensure inmates acquire skills before their release”, he added.

Drawing on his past experience working within the judicial service, Mr. Ajet-Nasam stressed the importance of rehabilitation and reintegration programs.

He recalled how some former inmates had successfully established businesses after benefiting from the Justice for All Programme, while others fell back into crime due to lack of opportunities.

“I once met a former inmate in traffic who proudly showed me his shop, saying he had been released through the Justice for All Programme. That was very fulfilling. But unfortunately, some who have no means of livelihood end up returning to prison. This is why we want to continue to support reforms that give inmates hope and a future,” he said.

The family appealed to other individuals, corporate bodies, and faith-based organizations to support prison facilities in the region, stressing that such acts reflect the Christian duty of love and compassion.

Chief Superintendent of Prisons, Emmanuel Nyatuame, who received the items on behalf of the Ghana Prisons Service, expressed gratitude to the family and noted the significance of the gesture.

“This donation will go a long way to help improve our food situation, which has been a major challenge,” he said.

“The daily feeding allowance for inmates is woefully inadequate, and as a result, contributions such as this are very critical. Beyond food, we are also constrained in providing vocational training and logistics to properly reform inmates before they are discharged,” he said.

Mr. Nyatuame highlighted the importance of skills training for inmates, explaining that without access to facilities such as workshops for carpentry or tailoring, many prisoners struggle to reintegrate into society after serving their sentences.

He echoed this appeal, urging more stakeholders to contribute to the upkeep and reformation of inmates, saying: “These are people who will one day return to our communities. If they leave without skills or support, society will feel the impact.”

The donation served as example of community-led support for prison welfare in Ghana, blending faith with social responsibility.
