Stakeholders in the Agege Federal Constituency have called on the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, to contest the 2027 governorship election in the state.

The call was made during the Agege Federal Constituency stakeholders’ briefing, convened by the lawmaker representing the area, Dr Wale Ahmed, at the Agege Local Government Secretariat on Friday.

Obasa, in a recent interview, had played down speculations about a governorship ambition, stressing that while every politician has personal aspirations, his decisions would be guided by party leadership, consultation and consensus.

“Every politician has ambitions, but you get to a stage where you cannot determine what comes next.

If you believe in the party structure, you understand that it’s about consultation, consensus, and the leadership’s direction,” he had said.

However, at Friday’s meeting, leaders and community groups in Agege declared their readiness to rally behind the Speaker if he enters the race.

Leading the charge, apex leader of the All Progressives Congress in Agege, Safari Adaranijo, said Agege yearned to produce the next governor.

“Agege also wants to produce governor,” Adaranijo said.

Speaking in the same vein, the Iyaloja-General of Agege, Mrs Monsurat Ajayi, declared that traders would fully support Obasa’s governorship ambition.

She said, “He came to seek for fifth term as member of the Lagos Assembly, we supported him. If he comes to seek our support to be governor, we, the traders, will support him.”

Also speaking, APC women leader in Agege, Mrs Iyabo Ogunmola, said Agege supports anyone Obasa puts forward for elective position.

She said, “We have never seen a politician like Mudasiru Obasa. He empowers us so much. Anyone who meets Obasa leaves happy. And we support anyone Obasa puts forward for political office. We pray for our leaders and we pray that God will guide Obasa to become governor of Lagos.”

Chairman of Orile-Agege Local Council Development Area, Mr Abiodun Idowu, said Obasa was destined for the top, rising from being a councillor to member of the House and Speaker.

He said, “We don’t have a resolution but if we have someone who has portrayed goodwill, pursued the progress of the general public, anywhere he’s going, we are ready to follow him. Agege federal constituency is standing firm that if Obasa blows the whistle for anything, that will be our direction. Obasa owns Agege and Agege owns Obasa. He is our catapult in the political scene and we are enjoying him in many ways. He is a man who has facilitated the progress of the masses and the general populace.

“I am enjoying from him; I am a man of nobody. If not for him and his support, I don’t think I can be executive chairman today. If a man can do that, without collecting a dime, what else do we give him than to keep supporting him?”

Similarly, chairman of the Arewa community in Agege Local Government Area, Salisu Gezawa, said the Arewa community supported Obasa because he is accessible.

He said, “As a community person, one problem or the other will come up. People will run to us for help. Immediately I place a call or I send a message, Obasa responds, even with his tight schedules.

“We know him as a man of his words. As Speaker, look at what he has done, especially in infrastructure development in Agege. If he becomes governor, Agege will be a mini America. So we are giving our support 100 per cent. Our loyalty is unflinching regarding Obasa because we know he is a doer.”

In his short remarks, another APC leader, Omotoso Alaba, simply echoed: “Obasa lo kan.”
