Kogi Ambush: Five Officers Killed

In Kogi State, a total of five police officers were killed in separate attacks on Sunday, as gunmen launched assaults in the Yagba East and Lokoja local government areas.
PUNCH MetroIt was understood that two officers lost their lives in Yagba East, and three more in the Kupa ward of the Lokoja II state constituency.
The event in Isanlu took place at a location known as Atan, situated along Ilafin Road when travelling from Makutu Isanlu towards Odogbe Isanlu.
The most recent homicide marks the second such incident in a fortnight, following the fatal shooting of three officers on September 10 in Egbe, a town bordering Kwara State, by assailants who remain unidentified.
Dr. Joshua Dare, the Executive Chairman of the Yagba East Local Government Area, released a statement on Monday conveying his profound sadness and shock.
"We are deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the tragic deaths of two brave officers from the Nigeria Police Force, MOPOL 70, who were brutally murdered today, Sunday, September 21, 2025. They were ambushed by unidentified attackers on Ilafin Road, Isanlu," he stated.
He stated, "This devastating event is not just an assault on the Nigerian Police Force, but also a strike against the tranquility and safety of our nation. It signifies a deliberate effort by those who oppose advancement to disrupt our society and frighten our citizens."
As we grieve the tragic deaths of these courageous officers, the council leader recognized their unselfish dedication to protecting lives and possessions in Yagba East and surrounding areas. He stressed that their bravery and devotion to the country will forever be remembered and etched into our community's history.
Dr. Joshua Dare Monday, representing the government and residents of Yagba East Local Government, offers sincere sympathies to the grieving families, the Nigeria Police Force, the Kogi State Command, and the broader security establishment. The people of Yagba East share in their sorrow and deeply empathize with their suffering.
The local government chairman urged the appropriate security forces to promptly look into this terrible crime, capture those responsible, and make certain they are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
He asserted that the government and security forces are resolute in their commitment to upholding peace and order, and no wicked deed can undermine this resolve.
The council leader also emphasized that his government remains completely dedicated to safeguarding lives and possessions throughout every community.
He mentioned that Yagba East will maintain its cooperative relationship with the Kogi State Government, the Nigeria Police Force, the armed forces, and other related organizations to guarantee the continued peace, safety, and security of the region.
According to him, “These two MOPOL 70 officers gave their lives while on duty; they are heroes of peace and protectors of justice. We should pay tribute to them not only through our words but also by making sure their sacrifice means something. Those who threaten peace must be overcome, and Yagba East must remain united and strong.”
At the time this report was submitted, the state police headquarters had not yet released any information regarding the situation.
Calls put across to the command’s spokesman, William Aya, rang out, but he did not respond to the text message sent to him.
