New FPRO Hundeyin meets NUJ FCT, seeks media collaboration

The recently named Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the Nigeria Police Force, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, paid a visit over the weekend to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) headquarters in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). His aim was to foster greater collaboration between law enforcement and the press, with the goal of increasing public confidence and bolstering security nationwide.
CSP Hundeyin, the replacement for DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated that he opted to visit the NUJ FCT Council first due to the media's vital function in the community. He mentioned that his job as the police spokesperson would be challenging to perform effectively without the backing of reporters.
He stated, "I need the press's help to do well in this job. I'm here to ask for your cooperation and teamwork, as well as fair reporting, because bad news stories can hurt the public's trust in the police."
Law enforcement depends significantly on information. Since officers can't be present at every location simultaneously, tips from the public and shared intelligence are crucial. However, if public trust in law enforcement erodes, these essential information channels disappear, endangering everyone.
We, for our part, will keep striving to the best of our ability to safeguard lives and possessions, as instability in one region can have repercussions for the entire country.
Hundeyin explained that his intention wasn't to regulate the media, but to promote fair and accountable journalism.
"Today, I'm asking for your assistance in fostering trust. Let's collaborate using transparent dialogue and cooperation to enhance both the police force and the nation," he stated.
He also guaranteed journalists that they would be treated justly as they performed their work, promising prompt attention to any problems they encountered when dealing with law enforcement.
In her response, Council Chairperson Comrade Grace Ike praised Hundeyin for choosing the NUJ FCT Secretariat as his initial point of contact before commencing his national duties. She also conveyed the Council's willingness to collaborate with him.
She stated, "Speaking for the NUJ FCT Council, I extend a warm welcome. We deeply appreciate the police's initiative to engage directly with the media. This demonstrates your dedication to transparent communication and improved comprehension."
The NUJ FCT stands firmly against any harassment or intimidation directed at journalists. Freedom of the press is a fundamental right, not a favor granted. As journalists, we acknowledge the vital function of the police in maintaining order and enforcing the law. Simultaneously, the public requires access to prompt, reliable, and truthful information to trust the police and other security organizations.
Therefore, trust and collaboration are essential to our relationship. By working together, we can halt the proliferation of false information and encourage journalism that benefits the progress of society.
Ike, a fellow member, assured the Council's commitment to collaborate with law enforcement to benefit the community.
She stated, "We're prepared to collaborate with you. Let's ensure the exchange of information is both open and ethical, enabling our organizations to better serve the public."
Comrade Grace Ike, along with other council members, welcomed Hundeyin. The group included Secretary Comrade Jide Oyekunle, Assistant Secretary Ms. Sharon Emefia, Auditor Rosemary Ukoko-Tega, Financial Secretary Henry Daniel Abimiku, Ex-Officio 1 Ebriku John Friday, and the Security Committee of the Council, headed by Chairman Comrade Sunday Odita.
