Residents in Nebbi District are urging political candidates to focus on enhancing road infrastructure, upgrading educational services, and establishing effective healthcare centers rather than offering gifts during election campaigns before the upcoming elections next year.

Residents claim that the act of attracting voters through minor gifts is obsolete and weakens people's capacity to ensure leaders are responsible for genuine progress.

On Thursday, 32-year-old Mike Ogenrwoth mentioned that numerous young people are readily influenced during election periods.

"The young people are only utilized by politicians during election periods to boost voter turnout, but once the elections are over, the youths lose their significance to the politicians," Ogenrwoth stated.Monitor.

Sofia Ayerango, a 65-year-old inhabitant of Olyeko Cell in Nebbi Municipality, mentioned that local communities still face challenges with unspoken school fees and inadequate transportation options.

She claimed that uncrossable rivers without bridges have led to higher school drop-out rates, but elected officials have not taken action.

"Politicians are liars who do not keep their promises, and this time, the locals should demonstrate and vote out all the political liars who have failed to meet their campaign commitments," Ayerango stated.

The presidential candidate from the National Unity Platform (NUP), Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, held campaign events in the broader Nebbi area on Monday and Tuesday, then traveled to Arua on November 17.

He revealed his party's platform, emphasizing key areas including reinstating constitutional governance, reducing unnecessary public spending, and enhancing the healthcare and education systems.

Kyagulanyi informed voters in Pakwach, Nebbi, and Zombo that his administration would repair roads and enhance public services if elected in 2026.

He blamed government officials for corruption, stating that ten trillion Ugandan shillings is lost annually from the national treasury as per IGG reports, resulting in critical sectors being underfunded.

Sarah Anirwoth mentioned that inadequate roads have consistently hindered progress and cross-border trade with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She pointed to the 21km Nebbi–Goli paved road, which was promised by the President but has yet to be completed.

Nevertheless, Nebbi Resident District Commissioner Robert Abak characterized Kyagulanyi's remarks as impractical.

He stated that no government is capable of offering employment to all citizens and emphasized that the NRM administration is already assisting Ugandans via self-training initiatives.

"Which NUP presidential candidate is making these claims? It's not feasible to start tarring all roads in the country—where would he get the funds for that?" Abak questioned. "What the NRM government is doing is evidence-based, which is why, due to their effective work, the NRM has neutralized all the influential opposition groups," he added.

Suleiman Hashim, the candidate from NRM running for a second term as MP for Nebbi Municipality, stated that Parliament has approved a $20 million loan to restore the Nebbi–Goli Road in order to enhance commerce.

He mentioned that the government intends to build a Health Centre III in each of the three areas within Nebbi Municipality.

"Government officials should advocate for projects that serve the needs of local communities and drive progress from the ground up," Hashim stated.

Uganda is scheduled to conduct its General Election on January 15, 2026, to elect new representatives and the president of the East African nation for the upcoming five-year term.
