95 Bobi Wine Supporters Charged Post-Campaign Arrests in Uganda

At least 95 members of the National Unity Platform (NUP) have faced legal charges in different courts throughout Uganda after being detained during campaign events organized by the party's presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi, also referred to as Bobi Wine.
The defendant is charged with numerous offenses, including hindering law enforcement, theft, intentional destruction of property, and various traffic violations like driving without a license, riding without helmets, and operating vehicles without insurance.
Mbarara remands 43 supporters
In Mbarara City, 43 supporters appeared before Grade One Magistrate Esther Bagala on Tuesday and were sent to jail until November 19. These individuals were part of 85 people who were detained on November 7 along the Mbarara–Ibanda road while accompanying Kyagulanyi to a gathering in Bwizibwera.
The prosecution informed the court that 38 of the accused hindered Mbarara District Police Commander Kenneth Kabwigo in carrying out his responsibilities, while five others were charged with traffic offenses. All 38 denied the allegations and sought bail through their attorneys, led by Kampala Woman MP Shamim Malende.
Magistrate Bagala rejected the immediate release of the accused, stating, "Although I am aware that the defendants have the right to personal freedom, this court must consider the current situation." The case was postponed until November 19 to provide time for submitting bail requests.
Five additional individuals — Onesmas Kasirye, Moses Mugabi, Godius Mwesigwa, Magembe Kasimu, and Adrian Taremwa — faced charges including driving without valid licenses, transporting passengers without proper authorization, and operating vehicles without insurance. Four of them admitted their guilt, whereas Mwesigwa contested the allegations.
State Prosecutor Rebecca Akulia stated that the investigations had been finalized and requested a date for the hearing.
Defense attorney Allan Musasire requested mercy, portraying Taremwa as a first-time offender "who did not waste the court's time and is worthy of an opportunity to change."
Magistrate Bagala sent the group to be held until November 14 for the sentencing.
Nine additional individuals held in Lira
Nine supporters of the NUP were sent to Lira Central Prison on charges of robbery and intentional destruction of property, following their remand at Lira Chief Magistrate’s Court.
The prosecution claims that on October 28, in Obot Village, the group damaged a police vehicle and stole a laptop, clothes, and 20 liters of diesel valued at Shs1.89 million. The damaged car, according to the police, was being operated with a false registration number.
Among those who were remanded are Isma Bukenya, Liberty Lekuru, Mastulah Nakabuye, Laston Waisua, Hope Nasozi, Kagawa Saluman, Regan Kamulegeye, Jamacidi Twaha Kavuma, and Muzambiru Ggaayi. Three more individuals — Steven Katamba, Aloysious Lubega, and Precious Paul Ssembusi — were granted bail following the submission of valid guarantees.
Police statement
The police spokesperson from Rwizi Region, Samson Kasasira, verified the arrests, stating that 85 individuals were taken into custody in Mbarara and Kiruhura districts while Kyagulanyi was campaigning in Ankole.
"They are accused of violations such as traffic infractions, assault, and hindrance, and have been moved to the appropriate areas where the incidents took place," Kasasira stated.
Three individuals were transferred to Mubende, three to Kyankwanzi, five to Lyantonde, three to Mayuge, one to Kakumiro, two to Lira, 12 to Kiruhura, one to Kampala, and 50 are still in Mbarara.
