A historic newspaper from Ireland, the Down Recorder, has stopped being published following 189 years of operation.

A weekly publication, located in Downpatrick, started being printed in 1836.

Owner Marcus Crichton verified that the last version of the document was released on Wednesday.

He mentioned that the newspaper sector was going through "challenging periods."

Local individual Trevor Love, hailing from Downpatrick, who "always" reads the Down Recorder, remarks that it's "a pity".

He stated, "It's unfortunate that it has occurred, but such events are common in today's world," and he added, "Everyone now gets [news] through their phones."

Mr. Love mentions that he is familiar with numerous individuals who have been employed by the newspaper throughout the years.

It would be very unfortunate if they discovered it today. The public should have been informed much earlier.

I am quite disappointed with the announcement.

'Blow for staff members'

The Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) for the region described it as a "sad day for Downpatrick."

Colin McGrath informed okay1News NI that the publication was "an organization that has delivered news and local updates for the community, and people will truly miss that weekly update, but I believe it is a reflection of the current era."

"People are no longer buying newspapers. They are turning to the internet for their news, and I believe this means we lose a small part of our community each time these publications shut down," he said.

Nevertheless, he mentioned that there was "definitely a role for print media."

This will certainly be a setback for the employees who have only recently been informed about the situation.

It is among the oldest newspapers found on these islands, and it's truly unfortunate that this will no longer exist.

Analysis: The newspaper sector is encountering difficulties

The shutdown of the Down Recorder represents the most recent instance of the difficulties encountered by the local newspaper sector.

A family-run establishment dedicated to maintaining high standards, the paper was recognized as newspaper of the year in 2014 but ceased operations just a little over ten years later.

Throughout, it continued to produce original stories and effectively reported on the towns and villages in southeast Down.

Its difficulties were both small and large – a shrinking sector dealing with evolving online behaviors along with the effects of COVID-19 restrictions had likely affected sales and ad income.

The absence will be noticeable in various aspects. In addition to a void in news reporting, the Recorder building itself is among the most notable in Downpatrick.

Located on the primary entrance road to the town, it is situated right next to the Arts Centre, courthouse, cathedral, and main shopping areas — the very attractions that contributed to its success for 189 years.

Audience and employees will be wishing for a comparable outcome to the one achieved in the Mournes of Newry in 2023.

Following the announcement of its closure, the Newry Reporter was acquired, relocated, and continues to be published in print.

A comparable situation here would imply this is an instance of maintaining the front page instead of halting the publication.
