Actress Accuses EFCC of Stealing Her Anti-Fraud Initiative

Nigerian actress and director Barbara Odoh has alleged theEconomic and Financial Crimes Agency(EFCC) of misappropriating her digital anti-fraud platform, BSafe Transact, without her permission.
In a statement released to PREMIUM TIMES on Thursday, Ms. Odoh requested support from the Presidency, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), and global organizations, stating that her invention is being presented in another form elsewhere.
"They have stolen my concept and are marketing it elsewhere without my awareness or approval," Ms. Odoh stated, offering no specifics about the claimed theft.
The EFCC has not yet provided a response to our reporter's inquiry regarding the accusation.
Ms. Odoh mentioned that she created the platform over multiple years using academic studies and personal insights, aiming to serve as a means to enable safe trade between Nigeria and the rest of the world, and to rebuild global trust in Nigerian companies.
She referred to BSafe Transact as "a humanitarian approach to restore confidence in commercial activities in Nigeria."
The Guardian Nigeria previously covered a press conference led by Ms. Odoh in March, where she claimed the EFCC "took" her innovation and that her project's domain was later marked as fraudulent.
She mentioned to reporters at that time that she created in 2021 a project named Bsafe Transact, a system aimed at improving secure transactions within mobile and web applications.
How it started
The actress stated that she officially submitted BSafe Transact to the EFCC in January before a five-member committee headed by the Commission's former IT Director, Isa Abdullahi.
At the meeting, she claimed, Mr. Abdullahi pledged the Commission's complete backing.

"The sooner we start this, the better; I just hope it will be the first initiative we take on this year. We've witnessed numerous situations in this office, and before you realize, someone will flee, head to Oyibo land, and a white man will arrive speaking slang, altering it from BSafe to a different name," she said, quoting Mr. Abdullahi during their meeting.
Ms. Odoh stated that following the presentation, contact from the EFCC ceased suddenly.
She mentioned that she later encountered Martins Otse, also referred to as Very Dark Man, advocating a concept she described as nearly the same in China, the same area she had suggested for the platform's initial international expansion.
Alleged intimidation
Ms. Odoh claimed that her BSafe Transact website and domain have been marked as fraudulent, with labels indicating scam, harmful activity, and credit-card phishing, even though the site did not conduct any commercial transactions other than trial runs and EFCC presentations.
"My website address has been locked, and I am now unable to access it. Someone is attempting to falsely accuse me and undermine my efforts," she stated.
She also expressed significant worries regarding personal safety, stating that she and her son have been getting frequent calls from unknown numbers, usually during the night, with the callers simply hanging up.
She mentioned that fans of Very Dark Man have sent her threatening messages through social media.
"When did seeking justice turn into an offense? Our existence is no longer secure. I will not give up my rights," she stated.
During a recent EFCC meeting with her attorney, Kingsley Arah, she stated that she was told, "He who makes a claim must provide evidence," which she viewed as a dismissive reply.
Call for justice
Ms. Odoh reached out to the President of Nigeria, the National Assembly Committees dealing with ICT and Human Rights, the National Human Rights Commission, international intellectual property protection agencies, and non-governmental organizations.
"I am a Nigerian who has put in the effort to create something that benefits our nation. I am merely requesting protection, justice, and equality," she stated.
PREMIUM TIMES contacted the EFCC through SMS and WhatsApp on Thursday but received no immediate reply.
