The administration of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi has distanced itself from the current proceedings in the Nigerian Senate aimed at amending the legislation that defines the University as a technology-focused institution to a traditional one.

The explanation was provided by the University via the Registrar, Alhaji Kabiru Garba Aminu, who informed reporters about the matter on Friday.

He stated, "We awoke one morning to learn from the media that a proposal had been submitted in the Senate Chambers to amend the University's founding laws. It came as a sudden shock and surprise to us."

He stated, "In the university system, there are administrative bodies, the University Senate and the Governing Council. These two bodies have not been consulted by anyone regarding the change in the university's establishment laws."

The Registrar mentioned, "You might be interested to know that, at this moment while we are speaking, there has been no official message sent to the University Administration and the community. As the Registrar, who is responsible for the university's rules and regulations, I have not been reached out to for any input."

Kabiru Garba Aminu stated, "The Vice-Chancellor, who serves as the main administrative and academic leader of the University, was not informed, nor was the Chairman of the Council or the Senate."

He mentioned, "The University has not received any such information from the Federal Ministry of Education or the National Universities Commission (NUC). All updates are shared through social media."

The Registrar, however, stated that the University has clearly expressed its stance; it is not informed about the process and therefore has no further argument besides not supporting the development and will make sure the opposition remains strong.

When asked if Senator Shehu Umar Buba, who introduced the bill, had reached out to the University regarding it, he responded that no communication had taken place, emphasizing, "As an organization established by law, we must be informed before any actions are taken on the law. We won't go looking for him; instead, he should come to us, which he has not done."

The Registrar mentioned that he has submitted a position paper to the different bodies, and the Vice-Chancellor has done the same, stating, "We will be present at the public hearings whenever and wherever they are held to emphasize our stance."

Additionally, commenting on the development, the National President of ATBU Alumni, Comrade Mohammed Sani Wada, backed the University Administration in opposing the proposal to amend the institution's founding law from technology-focused to traditional.

He stated that the Alumni's stance is that the process was unnecessary, as it could hinder the University's progress given the numerous accomplishments it has achieved since becoming a technology-focused institution.

As he stated, "If you examine closely, we have at least eleven traditional universities near ATBU. So why do we need to turn it into another conventional university?"

The National President of the Alumni stated, "Rather than expending effort and funds on altering the law, Senator Shehu Umar Buba should focus on aiding the University to improve. He could create a scholarship fund, construct additional lecture halls, purchase vehicles, and implement other development initiatives; his name would be immortalized."
