Australian couple returns from vacation to find house-sitter rented out their home to a stranger

A person who was looking after a house has been discovered using a couple's trust to rent out their multimillion-dollar property.PerthFrom their affluent western suburbs to a foreign visitor during their vacation.

A couple from Swanbourne, Laurain McCaughan and Jackie Bolt, had scheduled their usual dog sitter, Jae Samra, to take care of their groodle Gus during their absence in September and October.

The couple had been acquainted with Mr. Samra for two years following their discovery of him on the well-known online service Aussie House Sitters, where his profile indicated he was a 'holistic coach/investment banker' and a 'conscious carer.'

"He has taken excellent care of Gus and maintained the place in perfect condition – until now," Ms McCaughan said to The Post newspaper in Perth.

The first indication that something was wrong was a recycling bin full of empty beer cans.

Mr. Samra had previously informed the couple that he did not consume alcohol.

Shortly thereafter, Ms. Bolt was tidying the guest house on their land, which they rented out through Airbnb.

It was there that she discovered a copy of a three-page lease agreement, signed by Kony J Samra as the landlord and a man from Estonia as the tenant.

The rental contract stated that $1,500 would be paid during the three-week lease period, and it also required the tenant to move out by October 18, 2025.

"I thought oh my God, you bastard," remarked Ms. Bolt.

The couple found the tenant, who mentioned that Mr. Samra had reached out to him after he shared on Facebook that he was seeking housing.

"Jae made me feel like he was the house's owner and that the people he had rented the apartment to were away on vacation," he said.

Jae was present on the first day I moved in, but then mentioned he was leaving for a week.

The tenant mentioned that when Mr. Samra came back, he was accompanied by three dogs, one of which was Gus.

He filmed a video of the dogs, which Ms Bolt stated they could not identify and questioned if they belonged to other individuals who had entrusted Mr Samra with looking after their pets.

The managing director of Aussie House Sitters, Nick Fuad, stated that subletting or leasing a property during a house-sitting arrangement is not allowed according to the company's policies.

He mentioned to the Daily Mail that we had suspended his account as part of our complaint resolution process.

This caregiver failed to meet the scheduled deadline to address the accusations, resulting in a permanent ban.

We will be urging the owners to report to the police and hopefully have this individual charged.

Mr. Fuad mentioned that the platform supports 50,000 housesits annually and this marked the first occurrence of its kind during the 21 years of operation.

"Fortunately, we are part of a highly alert house-sitting group that promptly lets us know when something seems off," he said.

To prevent such occurrences and other violations of trust, we enforce a rigorous membership contract that all members must accept. This detailed terms of service explicitly prohibits any type of subletting, leasing, or utilizing the property for personal benefit.

Reports are examined quickly, and the account is temporarily blocked during the inquiry.

If the individual is determined to be guilty of the charges, or if they fail to respond to the complaint, they will be banned from the platform for life.

The Daily Mail has not been able to reach Mr. Samra.
