A heart-wrenching effort by a family to find their missing relative in Cheloino village, within the Konoin Constituency of Bomet County, has concluded with sorrow.

Pain and terror overwhelmed the worried relatives of Hellen Cherotich upon discovering her lifeless body.

Cherotich was discovered deceased following her disappearance a week prior, causing her family great concern over her fate.

Her corpse was found in the Kipsisin River while her family fought to cope with the profound sorrow.

"Ever since she was a child, she has struggled with epilepsy. A week ago, she was with her mother. When her mother fell asleep at night, Cherotich seized the opportunity and fled. She was observed taking a particular path. This morning, this young woman was discovered in the river," stated Joseph Langat, the village elder.

The news left Cherotich's family devastated, as they had been hoping to discover her alive and take her back home.

A relative described the final moments of the 41-year-old woman and the words she spoke before she disappeared.

"When she departed, she mentioned she was heading to my sister's house. Nevertheless, she never arrived there. When my sister was informed that she had returned home, she attempted to search for her but couldn't find her," he said.

Where was Cherotich's body taken by the police?

A wave of grief shadowed the expressions of residents as they observed the body of a woman with three children being pulled from the river.

It was transported to Kapkatet Sub-County Hospital Mortuary for storage, awaiting a post-mortem examination to determine the precise reason for her passing.

"When she disappeared a week ago, we collaborated closely with the family to locate her. As the area assistant chief, I shared the missing person report on all forums ranging from Bomet to Kericho. I also coordinated with other chiefs to ensure we worked collectively to find Cherotich," said Betty Koskei, the Chemalal assistant chief.

Mbugua Kiarie was fishing with his son when he unintentionally lost his balance, tumbled into the river, and passed away.

The 41-year-old had been involved in the activity for many years, until he sadly passed away.

Residents blamed the government for delaying aid, pushing them to seek other means to recover the body.

They also pointed out difficulties in the recovery operations, mentioning that the river was dirty and had many hindrances.

The neighborhood was without certified divers, and one individual who had volunteered to assist had to step down following slight injuries.
