It impacts millions of individuals globally, with the majority of those affected being women and children. It frequently leads to the exploitation of girls and women primarily, as well as boys and men, as victims find it difficult to escape from their traffickers. Victims are forced into labor, sexual abuse, servitude, or conditions akin to slavery, along with the removal of body parts and arranged marriages against their will.

South Africa is not exempt from this terrible crime, as numerous women and children are trafficked both out of and into the country each year. This occurs even though the nation has several laws in place aimed at combating human trafficking.

We follow the National Policy Framework for Handling Trafficking in Persons Offences, which promotes a coordinated approach to managing human trafficking. To implement this policy, we passed the Prevention and Combating of Trafficking in Persons Act in August 2015, addressing all areas related to human trafficking. The law sets a maximum penalty of R100 million, life imprisonment, or both for those convicted of the primary offence of human trafficking.

We also remain committed to holding those responsible for such crimes accountable. For example, six individuals were recently taken into custody in Mayfair, suspected of involvement in human trafficking, kidnapping, and extortion, as part of an operation led by the multi-agency team headed by the Anti-Kidnapping Task Force. Additionally, several suspects have already appeared before different courts throughout the country, while others have been sentenced to prison for human trafficking and associated offenses. These represent just some of the achievements, with many more arrests and convictions still required to make a significant impact in the battle against human trafficking. A comprehensive effort to combat human trafficking involves various fields and the entire community. It is crucial that we learn about the signs of human trafficking and inform the authorities about any unusual behavior. Human trafficking can occur openly, and it's essential to recognize that anyone might be involved as either a trafficker or a victim, particularly children. This could include your neighbor, friend, a business executive, or a local community member.

To stay safe, it's advisable to avoid traveling alone, during nighttime, or on isolated side streets. If you feel you are being followed, head to a busy area. Inform someone you trust about your interview plans and set up a time for them to check in or contact you. If feasible, have someone accompany you. These are some measures that can be taken, and children should also be educated about safety steps. Parents, guardians, and educators are encouraged to remain especially watchful regarding the safety and location of children under their supervision. Teach your child to be conscious of their surroundings, recognize potential dangers, and know how to respond. Instruct your child to move away from a stranger's vehicle.

Instruct children to avoid strangers at all times, and never share their name or address with anyone they don't know. Make sure your child understands that they can say no to any unwanted behavior and should leave such situations as soon as possible.

As we mark 30 Years of Freedom, we must not remain passive while women and children are unable to fully exercise their rights. Just as our forefathers stood against injustices, we should dedicate ourselves to ensuring that no woman, child, or man falls victim to such crimes.
