The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) of the Naval Training Command (NAVTRAC) based in Nutekpor, located in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region, Commodore James Adongo Agambire, has emphasized the importance of the Command's unified effort to promote the socio-cultural growth of the nearby communities.
He emphasized the need for unity and peaceful relations between NAVTRAC and its local communities. Commodore Agambire made these remarks during an elaborate induction ceremony held in his recognition as the 10th FOC of the Command at Nutekpor.
The well-attended induction ceremony was centered around the theme, 'Achieving Outstanding Performance via Humble Leadership and Collaborative Teamwork.' It drew participation from both senior and junior officers of the Navy and the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), with the Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing, the Chinese Defence Attaché, Colonel Dou Yan, and the President along with several members of the Naval Officers’ Wives Association (NOWA) in attendance.
Notable attendees at the event were several chiefs and queen mothers from the Agave Traditional Area, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the South Tongu Constituency, Maxwell Kwame Lukutor, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for the region, Victoria Dzeklo, the Registrar of Ho Technical University, Dr Charles Ameho, along with Commanders of neighboring security services in the area.
The head of the Religious Affairs Unit within the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), Apostle Dr. Brigadier General Benjamin Kumi-Woode, conducted the initiation ceremonies for the new FOC, assisted by other religious leaders from the Naval Command in Nutekpor and the Naval Headquarters in Accra.
At the event, Commodore James Adongo Agambire expressed the Command's shared commitment to enhancing the socio-cultural growth of communities near the Naval Command. He emphasized that this requires full unity and peaceful relations between NAVTRAC and nearby communities, which would create an environment conducive to teamwork and collaboration for advancement and progress. "The Naval Training Command, strategically located between the sea and surrounding communities, is more than just a military facility; it serves as a cornerstone of national development and a symbol of service," the FOC stated.
Commodore Adongo Agambire revealed that following the Command's formal commissioning in October 2020, NAVTRAC has achieved some small improvements. He mentioned that the naval recruit training school, for example, has completed training for five (5) groups of recruits and provided training to approximately four hundred (400) Army recruits from late 2023 to early 2024. He further stated that the school is preparing to accept and train recruits from the upcoming nationwide recruitment initiative.
As per his statement, the Naval Command, along with the commander of the 16th Artillery Brigade, was closely cooperating with the 66th Artillery Regiment of the GAF in Ho and other security agencies to address existing crimes and threats within the southern enclave, ensuring peace and stability in the areas surrounding NAVTRAC and the broader region.
The FOC highlighted the poor condition of roads and inadequate drainage systems inside and around the Command as a significant issue. "The internal roads and walkways, including our Parade Square, become severely flooded during rain, making them muddy and hindering both vehicle and personnel movement within the Command," he expressed. He stated that the roads and walkways, especially the parade square, require asphalt to stop water from pooling on the square during rainfall, a problem also due to the uneven surface of the area.
Commodore Agambire also highlighted the insufficient housing for staff, trainers, and students as another major issue, stating that this situation hinders NAVTRAC's ability to provide top-quality training to a larger number of students, particularly those from partner institutions in Ghana and overseas, thereby limiting the Command’s training impact.
The Minister of Roads and Highways and Member of Parliament for Adaklu, Governs Kwame Agbodza, served as the Guest of Honor. In a speech delivered on his behalf by Mr. Francis Ahlidza, the Director responsible for Monitoring and Evaluation at the Sector Ministry, the Minister praised the leadership and employees of the Command for their modest accomplishments in recent years.
He confirmed the Government's steadfast support for the Command, under the leadership of His Excellency, John Dramani Mahama, who is promoting the honorable mission of the Ghana Navy. According to Mr. Agbodza, his Ministry is dedicated to enhancing access roads leading to military facilities, including the Nutekpor Naval Command. He pointed out that this would improve movement, logistics, and the well-being of the personnel.
The Ministry, he mentioned, is also prepared to enhance its collaboration with the Ministry of Defence and the Ghana Navy in areas of common interest. 'We acknowledge that the security of our country and the creation of robust infrastructure are closely linked. In this context, we will keep working on initiatives that connect our citizens, bolster our national defense, and encourage broad-based growth,' Mr. Agbodza said.
Delivering a sermon centered on the topic, Apostle Dr Brigadier General Kumi-Woode emphasized that leaders bear a duty not only towards their subordinates but also towards their nation. In his view, leaders should not only serve as genuine examples but also strive for the well-being of others, including those under their command. He further encouraged subordinates to remain faithful to their leaders, stating that this is the sole path to serving both God and the country.
In his Islamic sermon addressed to the assembly, the Command Imam, S/Lt. Fatih Yusha, reminded the attendees that genuine leadership involves guiding and assisting others with modesty. He stated that a humble leader should not only offer advice and listen to subordinates when needed, but also appreciate collaboration and serve as a positive role model for others to emulate.
The Regional Minister, James Gunu, praised Commodore Agambire and assured the Volta Regional Co-ordinating Council (VRCC) of its dedication and backing for the successful completion of his tour of the Command.
The Member of Parliament (MP) representing the region, Maxwell Kwame Lukutor stated that the importance of the Command's strategic position cannot be overstated.
He remained hopeful that the Command's location would not only enhance the human resources and economic capabilities of the region but also promote stronger civilian-military connections among the population.
