His prominence in Nigerian journalism was unquestionable. Upon receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 25th Diamond Awards for Media Excellence (DAME) in Lagos in 2016, the citation highlighted his qualities, describing him as "a distinguished columnist, writer, and wordsmith," "sharp and humorous," a "proficient commentator," and "undoubtedly one of Nigeria's most admired and impactful writers."

The passing of Dan Agbese on November 17, at the age of 81, naturally grabbed media attention. It was likely the highest honor for the seasoned journalist, recognized as an exceptional writer of headlines.

The DAME citation noted that "Agbese's long-term influence, maybe, stems from the thoroughness he applies to his work, the attention given to his selection of topics and language, the reasoning that goes along with his writings, and the captivating manner in which he delivers them."

Born in Agila, within the Ado Local Government Area of modern-day Benue State, where he was bestowed with a chieftaincy title known as Awan’Otun, he pursued studies in Journalism at theUniversity of Lagos(1970-1973) and Thomson Foundation, Cardiff, UK (1976); and obtained a master's degree in Journalism from Columbia University, New York, USA (1976-1977).

His career in journalism started following a period of teaching. He worked as a staff writer for the New Nigerian newspapers from 1967 to 1970. He then became chief sub-editor at The Nigerian Standard in Jos from 1974 to 1976, and later served as assistant editor from 1978 to 1980. He also held the position of general manager at Radio Benue in Makurdi from 1980; special adviser and director of information for Benue State from 1980 to 1982; and editor of New Nigerian in Kaduna from 1982 to 1984.

The most significant phase of his career was his collaboration with Dele Giwa, Ray Ekpu, and Yakubu Muhammed in establishing Newswatch magazine in 1984, a publication that transformed Nigerian journalism through its in-depth reporting and unique presentation. At one stage, the magazine's commitment to uncovering the truth led to conflicts with the military regime of that time.

It is a reflection of the magazine's achievement and popularity that it led to the creation of multiple other publications that followed its format.

He first worked as the magazine's managing editor, and subsequently took on the role of deputy editor-in-chief/deputy chief executive (1986-1994), followed by editor-in-chief (1994-2010). Following his retirement from Newswatch Communication Limited in 2011, he co-founded a media consultancy.

He authored several books, some focused on enhancing journalism practices within the nation. His publications include “Fellow Nigerians: Turning Points in the Political History of Nigeria (1966 – 1999)”; “Nigeria, their Nigeria”; “Babangida: Military, Politics and Power in Nigeria”; “Style: A Guide to Good Writing”; “The Reporter’s Companion”; “The Columnist’s Companion: The Art and Craft of Column Writing”; and “The Energy Crises in Nigeria.”

Certainly, he had intended to establish a book publishing company following his postgraduate studies. In an interview, he stated: "I believed I was entering the book publishing industry. This was due to my extended involvement with book publishing during my youth service in 1973/1974. I worked as a reader for Heinemann educational books in Ibadan, and thus developed a strong interest in writing books. I had hoped that upon returning, I would start a book publishing company, but it did not happen that way."

Following his departure from Newswatch, he continued to contribute a column to The Guardian newspaper, highlighting the significance of his perspective. In 2021, the League of Nigerian Columnists (LNC) presented him with the top accolade for a writer in Nigeria—the LNC Fellowship.

In a tribute after his passing, the LNC stated that Agbese's legacy "shows us the lasting importance of responsible writing, intellectual integrity, and a dedication to promoting the public interest. During an era when public conversation is becoming more divided and attention-seeking, his model reminds us of the respect that should be associated with the written word."

He will be recalled as a passionate lover of words who advocated for aesthetic excellence in conveying truth.
