Experts and those involved in the aviation sector have voiced worries following United Nigeria Airlines' official acceptance of public apologies from Nigerian comedian Freedom Atsepoyi, also known as Mr Jollof, and social media advocate Martins Otse, commonly referred to as Verydarkman.

Two individuals engaged in a physical fight aboard one of the airline's planes. The event took place on a flight set to leave Asaba International Airport bound for Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

In a statement released by the airline's Public Relations Officer, Chibuike Uloka, United Nigeria Airlines stated that it had recognized the apologies shared by the two individuals on social media. The airline mentioned that both men promised to avoid any future behavior that might threaten aviation safety or cause disturbances on its flights or those of other airlines.

"We believe this matter will be treated with respect, in the interest of ensuring a secure, respectful, and well-organized travel atmosphere for every passenger," Uloka said. The incident, which took place on Monday, led to demands from aviation professionals for harsher consequences for passengers causing disturbances. The conflict caused the plane's departure to be postponed, impacting everyone aboard.

The episode details a sequence of comparable events. On August 5, 2025, KWAM 1 created chaos at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja by trying to board a ValueJet flight with a banned flask of alcohol.

On August 10, 2025, a traveler named Emmanson was taken off an Ibom Air flight traveling from Lagos to Uyo after she refused to switch off her phone when asked by the crew and then became physically confrontational with the cabin staff.

Although these events drew public backlash regarding uneven enforcement, Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, stepped in to avoid severe penalties for those concerned.

However, experts argued that proper punishment is essential to prevent recidivism. Aviation industry analysts highlighted that letting celebrities off without repercussions might damage the credibility of airline safety rules.

The United Nigeria Airlines praised the joint efforts of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Airport Security, Asaba International Airport Authority, and their own staff, highlighting that the incident was handled effectively in line with aviation safety standards.

Reaffirming its dedication to addressing disruptive passenger conduct, Uloka mentioned that the airline collaborates with the Airline Operators of Nigeria and oversight bodies to ensure strong safety and conduct standards. He encouraged travelers to work alongside airline employees and airport security to safeguard the quality of air travel.

"United Nigeria Airlines is dedicated to providing secure, dependable, and respectful service to every traveler within our routes," Uloka stated.

Industry specialist Olumide Ohunayo expressed disapproval of the mild responses to recent airport incidents, asking when officials would establish a clear boundary. "When you keep giving a light punishment, when will you set the limit? Are we still waiting for the NCAA to comment, or is an apology sufficient because it came from a celebrity? These people are public figures who should be leading by example, but we keep acting as if airport safety and rules are not important," he stated.

Retired Group Captain John Ojikuti also criticized the airline's choice to accept apologies instead of involving law enforcement. "Is the airline responsible for enforcing NCAA rules? The NCAA has the authority to investigate and refer offenders to the police once they are proven guilty. Individuals involved in the incident on the plane should be turned over to the authorities. It is not the role of an airline to overlook such actions," Ojikuti stated.

The event brings attention to continuous discussions within Nigeria's air transport industry regarding the implementation of safety rules, responsibility for travelers, and the boundaries of company authority when handling violations of aviation security.
