Over 21 million individuals in Sudan, which constitutes 45% of the country's population, are facing insufficient food intake due to the ongoing conflict between opposing military groups, as reported by the World Food Programme (WFP).

UN Spokesman Stéphane Dujarric shared the information during theregular briefing to journalistsin New York on Thursday.

The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary organization Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been engaged in a conflict for control since April 2023, leading to one of the most severe humanitarian emergencies globally.

"Unthinkable violence" in El Fasher

Tensions have escalated in recent weeks since the RSF captured El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, after a prolonged siege that lasted over a year.

"We are rapidly providing emergency food and nutritional supplies to hundreds of thousands"those fleeing extreme violence and starvation," it stated.

Access makes the difference

Mr. Dujarric mentioned that hunger has been verified in El Fasher and Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan state, both areas that are largely isolated from assistance.

"However, In nine additional areas where the WFP has consistently provided support, severe food shortages have improved due to ongoing aid.," he said.

The World Food Programme emphasizes that in areas where conflict has decreased and aid efforts have grown, food insecurity has dropped, demonstrating that steady access is the key to moving from famine to real recovery.

Numerous additional people can be accessed

The United Nations organization currently provides emergency food, cash, and nutritional assistance to more than four million individuals in Sudan every month, targeting areas that were previously difficult to access within four states: Darfur, Kordofan, Khartoum, and Al Jazira.

"With additional resources, the WFP could expand its assistance to eight million individuals.monthly, and further lower the chances of hunger spreading to the most affected regions," he stated.

But without further assistance, this delicate advancement might be swiftly reversed.

Mr. Dujarric called on the global community "to keep increasing their efforts, providing the necessary support and financial resources to assist those in Sudan who require urgent aid."

Families "running out of time"

In addition, the UN refugee agency,UNHCR, made an urgent call on Thursday to Sudanese civilians who "are now running out of time" as communities are cut off from assistance.

The organization emphasized the situation of families who have escaped conflict and widespread reported abuses in El Fasher.

"Children are starving, parents are in despair...They require protection, security, and access to humanitarian aid," UNHCR stated ina tweet.

It occurred one day following the UN Secretary-General's deep worry about accounts of large-scale crimes in El Fasher and increasing conflict in the Kordofans.

António Guterres addressed journalists after the annual combined meeting of the United Nations and the African Union (AU), which took place in New York on Wednesday.

"The supply of arms and fighters from outside sources needs to be halted. The movement of humanitarian assistance should be allowed to swiftly reach those in need. Hostilities must come to an end," he said.said.

The UN Secretary-General urged the conflicting parties to cooperate with his Special Representative for Sudan "and implement rapid, concrete actions aimed at achieving a negotiated resolution."
