... states that the payment will be determined by performance

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has directed waste management companies operating in the FCT to quickly enhance cleanliness across the region, stating that no justifications will be accepted.

Wike made this accusation in Abuja on Friday, November 14, 2025, during an interactive session with 54 waste management contractors who had recently received waste collection contracts from the FCC.

Speaking to the contractors, Wike highlighted the essential role of proper waste management in the FCT and stated that a Task Force would be established right away to oversee their activities, noting that future payments would depend on good performance.

The Minister stated, "Handling waste is a challenging task. Therefore, I urge you to ensure that you are fulfilling your role in the development of our capital city."

Please assist us in maintaining the cleanliness of the city. This is a role you have chosen; no one has compelled you. I guarantee that your salary is not an issue. Perform the task as instructed and do it thoroughly. There will be no bias. Your work will speak for itself, and you must complete the job.

He cautioned that he would not hesitate to end the contract with any cleaning company if refusal is observed within their assigned area.

"This will not follow the usual routine. You are required to work over the weekend and establish a dedicated team for waste removal," Wike instructed.

He also ordered the Procurement Director to conduct immediate inspections to evaluate the capabilities of companies that have been assigned more than one operational location, emphasizing that justifications concerning faulty equipment would no longer be tolerated.

"Individuals who are granted more than one slot must be aware of their capabilities. If you are assigned two locations, we will not tolerate poor equipment. You cannot apply for jobs in two regions if you lack the ability to perform. We don't want any area to be neglected. We aim for all areas to be clean," he said.

Wike also encouraged locals to offer input to the government regarding the contractors' work, promising that their opinions are important in facilitating payments.

In response to a request from the contractors for the payment of eight months' overdue amounts, the Minister noted that certain areas, especially sections of Asokoro, had not been adequately served by the contractors in previous periods. He stated that the outstanding eight-month payments would be handled, but emphasized that the payments would be made strictly based on merit.

Previously, Mr. Felix Obuah, the Coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), stated that 54 winning contractors were chosen from more than 500 applicants, mentioning that the firms have received official award letters and been allocated various areas within the FCT.

On behalf of the contractors, Mr. Ibrahim Babayo expressed gratitude to the Minister for granting the audience and called on his colleagues to take heed of the warnings, while also committing the contractors to maintaining a clean FCT.
