The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has rejected allegations that Nigeria infringes on religious freedom, calling them untrue and harmful to the nation's reputation.
At the 5th National Advertising Conference, which took place on Thursday in Abuja, Idris stated that these assertions misrepresent the true nature of Nigeria's diversity.
Esteemed attendees, our country today encounters issues that are not solely economic or related to security, but also communication-based.
One of the most serious issues is the intentional dissemination of false information — especially the harmful and misleading claim that Nigeria violates religious freedom.
"I want to clearly and strongly say that this story is not true. It misrepresents our reality as a country made up of various people and religions who have coexisted peacefully for many years," he explained.
The official stated that although Nigeria encounters security issues, these problems are not driven by religious reasons.
He stated, 'All Nigerians — Christians, Muslims, and individuals of different beliefs — have experienced the threat of terrorism and robbery.'
Idris informed attendees that the current government is focusing on enhancing security and restructuring its systems to fight against terrorism.
"We have made significant investments in enhancing our security framework, restructuring the command and control system, and introducing innovative concepts and new viewpoints in the fight against terrorism," he stated.
The event, hosted by the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria, focused on the topic 'Marketing Communication: Transforming Business and Driving Growth in Difficult Periods.'
Idris called on experts in marketing and advertising to contribute to spreading truthful stories about Nigeria.

He mentioned that individuals in the field of communication have an obligation to highlight truth and harmony in their roles.
"We require a communication revival — one that focuses on facts rather than fear, unity instead of division, and truth in place of propaganda," he stated.
Idris also stated that his department will keep collaborating with ARCON and other relevant parties to enhance the advertising and communication sector. He noted that the National Values Charter Framework is being put into action to encourage honesty, ethical behavior, love for the country, and a sense of national honor.
In his opening speech, Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo, the Director General of ARCON, stated, “In today's world, market algorithms and promotional efforts are evolving at an unprecedented pace, consumer behavior and insights are growing increasingly difficult to monitor, and digital disruption is reshaping the standards of interaction, making our capacity to communicate efficiently more essential than ever.”

The minister's comment follows the recent statements made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who claimed that Christianity in Nigeria is experiencing an "existential threat" from extremist Islamist groups.

He also instructed the Pentagon to prepare "options for potential military actions" against terrorist organizations in Nigeria — statements that led to criticism from the FG and worry among international powers.
Nevertheless, Tinubu rejected the claims, stating that Nigeria ensures freedom of religion and safeguards the rights of all religious groups, while China and Russia called on Washington to respect Nigeria's independence.
