A fire incident on Thursday has caused interruptions in the Blue zone area of the current eventUN Climate Change Conference(COP30) in Belém, Brazil, leading to the temporary shutdown of the Blue Zone where official discussions occur.

Organizers stated that emergency personnel quickly removed delegates and controlled the fire in a short time.

In a shared statement, the Brazilian government and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) mentioned that the area will stay closed as the fire department carries out an extensive safety evaluation.

"Earlier today, a fire occurred in the Blue Zone of the COP30 location in Belém. The fire department and UN security personnel reacted quickly, and the fire was contained within about six minutes. Individuals were evacuated without incident," the statement mentioned.

It mentioned that, as a precaution, both sides had "agreed to temporarily shut down the Blue Zone while the fire department conducts a thorough safety inspection."

The Blue Zone refers to the UN-managed, highly secure area within a COP venue where official climate discussions take place. Entry is limited to those who are officially registered, such as government representatives and accredited journalists. This area includes large assembly halls, conference rooms, and national booths where nations present their climate initiatives and conduct specialized meetings.

Officials stated that 13 people received on-the-spot treatment for smoke inhalation. Participants have been instructed to wait for an official update set for 8 p.m., which will decide when the negotiation area can safely reopen. The Green Zone is not impacted, and events there are proceeding as planned.

The event took place within 48 hours of the end of COP30. Officials had varied reactions as the meeting, which started on November 10 and is set to finish on November 21, reached its last phase.

Information about what caused the fire and the level of destruction is still unknown. It is also unclear if the discussions will be prolonged.

COP30 Focus

The focus of this year's conference is on initiatives aimed at limiting global temperature increase to 1.5°C, the presentation of updated national climate plans (NDCs), and the execution of financial promises agreed upon at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Organizers state that the Global Stocktake informs the COP30 Action Agenda and highlights six key areas: energy, industry, and transportation; forests, oceans, and biodiversity; agriculture and food systems; resilient cities, infrastructure, and water; human and social development; and facilitating factors such as finance, technology, and capacity.

At the start of the conference on November 6, UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that COP30 "needs to spark a decade of increased action and results."

"The 1.5°C threshold is a critical boundary for humanity. It needs to remain achievable," he stated, encouraging nations to expand initiatives that reshape economies and safeguard those at risk.

Mr. Guterres also cautioned that the growing disparity in adaptation funding keeps the world's most vulnerable populations at risk from rising ocean levels, devastating storms, and intense heat.

In the meantime, Nigeria's Vice President, Kashim Shettima, stated that Nigeria plans to utilize COP30 to "capitalize on all available opportunities for funding climate-resilient initiatives and associated measures, especially through the global carbon market."
