A new project within Airtel's infrastructure and innovation strategies is the launch of Nxtra by Airtel, which is East Africa's biggest data center.

Nxtra aims to deliver a secure and expandable infrastructure, with the goal of enhancing digital robustness, especially for small and medium-sized businesses, while generating hundreds of employment opportunities and invigorating the regional technology sector.

"As data becomes the core of modern economies, Nxtra by Airtel will offer a secure and forward-looking infrastructure that allows Kenyan businesses, particularly small ones, to store, handle, and access information effortlessly. By doing this, we are not only enhancing connectivity and generating employment, but also reinforcing the basis for innovation, competitiveness, and inclusive growth in the digital era," Malhotra stated.

Closing the gap in educational technology access

In addition to infrastructure, Airtel Kenya is directly addressing the digital gap in education via its Adopt a School Initiative.

The initiative, carried out in collaboration with UNICEF, has given more than 100,000 students throughout Kenya access to online learning resources and digital materials, turning classrooms into portals of possibility.

"By collaborating with UNICEF through our Adopt a School Initiative, we are helping to close the digital gap by providing more than 100,000 students in Kenya with access to online educational resources and digital learning technologies," the company shared with okay1.co.ke.

Airtel's influence in Kenya and across Africa

Airtel's network now reaches 81.2% of the population, featuring more than 36,000 4G towers, with over 15,300 located in rural regions, as stated in the company's 2025 Sustainability Report.

This growth has significantly enhanced access to voice, data, and mobile financial services, boosting local economic development and allowing marginalized communities to reach critical services.

Airtel's efforts in promoting digital access have been closely linked to enhancing financial independence. The company currently supports 44.6 million users on Airtel Money, with women making up 44.2% of this group, highlighting its dedication to narrowing the gender disparity in financial services.

Its network of 1.7 million agents also offers income possibilities and enhances market presence, highlighting the company's function as a driver of job creation.

Sustainability continues to be a key focus for Airtel Kenya, highlighted by the transition of 500 remote sites to grid-connected power sources and the substitution of more than 1,400 old batteries with lithium-ion ones.

The organization has successfully recycled 93% of all waste it produced, reducing its ecological impact and promoting the circular economy.

Airtel is leveraging technology to drive change by integrating targeted investments with programs that focus on the community, covering areas such as education, job opportunities, gender balance, and ecological stewardship.
