Lagos —Genesis Energy has revealed a partnership with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPC Ltd., aimed at delivering surplus electricity produced by the Port Harcourt Refining Company, PHRC, to the national power network.
The statement was released during an official trip by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, to Genesis Energy's facility located inside the Port Harcourt Refinery in Eleme, Rivers State.
The organization took the chance to highlight Genesis Energy's role in Nigeria's industrial development by operating the country's biggest authorized private off-grid renewable energy facility (84MW).
The facility provides reliable and eco-friendly power to the PHRC — greatly enhancing refinery performance, boosting regional energy stability, and decreasing reliance on diesel and grid fluctuations.
Genesis Energy stated that the collaboration is in line with the Federal Government's Power Sector Reform and Energy Transition Agenda, aimed at maximizing Nigeria's local power generation, improving grid reliability, and increasing electricity access across the country — marking a significant step forward in the nation's path toward a more dependable, efficient, and eco-friendly energy system.
It also highlights the essential part that clean, dependable, and locally produced energy plays in boosting the Nigerian economy, promoting industrial expansion, and aiding national development objectives.
During the visit, Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, praised Genesis Energy's outstanding performance and emphasized the Federal Government's dedication to creating a business climate that draws in and safeguards private-sector investment within the power sector.
He mentioned that the government alone is unable to finance the energy sector, and collaborations such as the Genesis Energy–NNPC Ltd. partnership are crucial for addressing infrastructure shortfalls and providing consistent electricity to industries, companies, and homes across the country.
The Minister stated, 'We are prepared to take all necessary actions to draw in investors who will assist us, ensuring that industries, businesses, and homes receive continuous, operational, and dependable electricity.'
We have established a thorough policy and steady regulatory system that allows private sector investors to work with assurance, recoup their investments, and significantly support national development. This partnership will act as a demonstration project for incorporating surplus capacity into the national grid and may result in an extra 120MW increase after the pilot stage is completed. He confirmed the Federal Government's willingness to accelerate transmission infrastructure and commercial agreements to ensure smooth power delivery from the facility to the grid.
The 84MW Standalone Independent Power Plant (IPP), managed by Genesis Energy, is situated at the Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) and is recognized as the country's biggest privately-owned off-grid renewable energy facility, marking the company's first major clean energy initiatives in the region.
The facility, which utilizes three GE TM2500+ gas turbines, provides continuous, eco-friendly power directly to the refinery — enhancing operational efficiency, boosting local energy security, and decreasing reliance on diesel and grid fluctuations. The PHRC IPP also demonstrates how Gas-to-Power serves as a key driver for renewable energy development — with each 1MW of gas-to-power capacity enabling up to 2MWp of solar power investment, thus aiding Nigeria’s Just Energy Transition and climate resilience goals.
Mr. Akinwole II Omoboriowo, the Chairman and CEO of Genesis Energy Group, emphasized the company's commitment to utilizing cutting-edge clean energy technologies to drive Nigeria's industrial and economic growth.
At Genesis Energy, we continue to be dedicated to driving progress through strategic alliances that reinforce Nigeria's energy infrastructure and increase access to dependable electricity. As Nigeria moves forward in its quest for consistent power supply, the importance of cooperation between the public and private sectors has never been greater. A notable example is our collaboration with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Limited). This significant initiative facilitates the delivery of surplus electricity from our Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC) facility to the national grid. This partnership with NNPC Ltd. showcases practical innovation — utilizing existing resources to broaden energy availability, boost refinery efficiency, and support national growth. This project extends beyond just generating megawatts; it is fueling employment, industries, and communities.
