Air travel was briefly halted at two airports – among them the largest in the Midwest – as the country's aviation sector works to resume normal operations after a significant government shutdown.

The Federal Aviation Administration stated on Thursday afternoon that a halt on takeoffs has been implemented atChicagoO'Hare International Airport and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport experienced problems with noise levels.

It was known as Skywest, Republic, United,Alaska, GoJet and a number of airlines were compelled to cancel 44 flights in Chicago,Travel and Tourism World Reports. 

The ground stop has now been removed, but as of 8pm EST, 10 percent of departing flights and seven percent of arriving flights were still delayed,according to FlightAware. 

The disruptions mainly impacted travelers going to other airports in the Midwest, as reported by Travel and Tour World.

The Daily Mail has contacted airport authorities for further details.

However, the news arrives as airlines showed confidence that they might return to regular operations at the nation's 40 most congested airports following the federal government's removal of the directive to reduce certain flights.

The FAA stated on Wednesday evening that airlines will not need to reduce more than six percent of flights at those airports due to air traffic controller staffing levels.has shown considerable progress over the past few days.

The order that became effective last Friday requested that the flight reductions rise to eight percent on Thursday and reach a maximum of 10 percent on Friday.

The order was issued because a number of air traffic controllers failed to report for work as they were not receiving pay during the shutdown - and the increaseshortages of personnel at airport control towers and regional control centers led to the decision to reduce flights because of safety worries.

The current lack of several thousand controllers was severe enough that even a few absences in certain areas led to issues.

FAA and Transportation Department officials provided no updates on Thursday morning regarding when they plan to rescind the order. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy mentioned that the decision will depend on the safety data being closely monitored by FAA experts.

Meanwhile, airlines state they are prepared and anticipate that regular operations will return within three to four days following the order's cancellation - although some specialists have cautioned that challenges could persist beyond Thanksgiving travel.

We are excited to restart regular operations in the coming days once the FAA approves. We anticipatewelcoming 31 million travelers—a historic high—on our flights throughout the upcoming Thanksgiving travel season, which starts next Friday, said the Airlines for America trade group on Thursday.

American Airlines' CEO Robert Isom and Chief Operating Officer David Seymour informed staff in a letter on Thursday that they are beginning to notice enhancements as air traffic controller staffing has become more stable in the past day or two, although additional flight reductions will still be necessary until the FAA removes the restriction.

This, they stated, means that travelers should already be experiencing fewer delays and cancellations on the day of their flights.

Two executives stated they are confident that American Airlines' planning and measures to reduce interruptions will enable the airline to recover quickly and "deliver a solid Thanksgiving operation," adding that millions of passengers "deserve this assurance."
