Kogi: ADC Petitions NASS for Vacant Seat Declaration
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) branch in Kogi State has sent a letter to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, requesting that the Yagba Federal Constituency seat be declared empty after Hon. Leke Joseph Abejide was removed from the party.
The correspondence, dated November 11, 2025, and obtained by the Speaker’s Office on November 13, was jointly authored by the ADC state chairman, Hon. Kingsley Temitope Ogga, and the State Secretary, Comrade Adaji John Udale.
In the correspondence, titled Notice of Removal/Request to Declare Hon. Leke Joseph Abejide's Position Empty, the party notified the House that Abejide was removed due to serious misconduct and anti-party actions, in violation of the ADC Constitution.
As stated in the letter, the legislator was suspended on 4 August 2025, together with four others, due to actions against the party's interests, prior to his removal being approved by the Appeal Committee on 28 August 2025.
The party mentioned that Abejide's removal resulted from his refusal to attend the Appeal Committee and his ongoing public criticisms of the ADC on national television and other media channels.
"Later, he was removed by the Appeal Committee established to reassess his case because he did not show up before the committee on 28 August 2025, and he kept making anti-party statements on different national television channels against the party," the letter stated.
The ADC leadership called on the National Assembly to follow legal procedures and declare the Yagba Federal Constituency seat empty, emphasizing that "the vote is the party's, not the candidate's."
"Additionally, we ask that the position of Hon. Leke Joseph Abejide be considered empty. This aligns with the law's stipulation that the vote is for the party, not the individual candidate," the statement noted.
The party also included all pertinent documents, such as the official notice of removal and records from the disciplinary and appeals committee meetings, to back up its assertion.
In reply, one of the lawmaker's media assistants stated that Abejide was already seeking advice from his legal counsel about the situation.
It is remembered that Hon. Abejide, who was re-elected to the House of Representatives under the ADC banner in 2023, had conflicts with the party's state leadership concerning a reported strained connection with the state executive.
