The Motorcycle Operators Union of Nigeria (MOUN), Delta State Branch, has started gathering daily "health fees" by selling a ₦200 ticket to motorcycle riders throughout the state.
At a press conference organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) at the Warri Correspondents’ Chapel, the Union's Deputy National President, Comrade Julius Oghenewevgba Bobi, declared the official start of activities in Delta State.
Surrounded by National Provost Monday Ekharenhor and Delta State Chairman Chief Austin Okorare, along with other state and local government officials, Comrade Bobi stated that the program aimed to enhance the well-being of drivers throughout the state.
"This funds are intended to support the riders and improve their lives," he stated.
He revealed that the Union had formally informed the appropriate government departments and received approvals allowing it to start functioning.
Comrade Bobi highlighted that forming a union is a constitutional right, cautioning that "no employer has the power to prevent an employee from joining a union," as this would be considered a criminal act under labor laws.
He called on motorcycle riders to align with MOUN, referring to the group as a platform focused on the health and happiness of all Okada drivers in Delta State and further afield.
"Among Okada riders, there are graduates who took up riding because of poverty and joblessness. With this union, our goal is to help our members achieve a better standard of living," he added.
The leader of the MOUN disclosed that a portion of the daily fees would support a health insurance program in collaboration with the Delta State Health Insurance Scheme, headed by Dr. Isaac Akpoveta.
"Out of the ₦200 daily ticket, part of it is allocated to a health insurance policy costing ₦7,000 annually, which includes the rider, their spouse, and four children," he explained.
He additionally revealed that the union was in the process of finalizing arrangements to purchase 20,000 motorcycles from China, which would be given out at no cost to registered members who have valid Union ID cards and driver's licenses.
Comrade Bobi mentioned that the union had also established a task force to ensure the transparent gathering of membership fees and manage grievances, guaranteeing that leadership information would be easily accessible.
He mentioned that with the creation of MOUN, the issue of harassment faced by Okada riders from security personnel would be resolved, as the union would now act as a central organization to protect their rights and interests.
He stated that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has given permission for MOUN's activities in Delta State, and the Transport Commissioner has been properly informed.
Bobi explained that the daily ticket collection is applicable solely to motorcycle operators, excluding tricycle (Keke) drivers, since they are not part of MOUN.
He further stated that the union has created an extensive database of its members, and that the daily ₦200 fee collection officially began on Thursday, 13 November.
"This compilation represents a country-wide effort focused on enhancing the well-being of motorbike riders. We have contacted all pertinent governmental institutions and obtained their confirmations," Bobi ended.
