MOWAA Scandal: Okpebholo Promises Criminal Action

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State stated on Friday that his government will not shy away from taking legal action against anyone found responsible for the ongoing issues involving the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA), emphasizing that no person or organization will be exempt from consequences if misconduct is identified.

The leader made this statement upon meeting the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa, during a formal visit to the Government House in Benin.

Okpebholo, who voiced significant worry regarding how his administration was allegedly excluded from vital details about the project, stated that the secrecy surrounding MOWAA's activities brings up serious concerns about openness and motives.

He stated, "I didn't wish to address this publicly once more, but the moment has arrived to present the truth. In the end, there will be legal action taken regarding this issue."

We are not battling investors. Our responsibility is to safeguard Edo State and, in turn, Nigeria. There will be no refuge for lawbreakers within our territory.

The governor mentioned that official records acquired by the state government showed major changes to MOWAA's registration information, which he stated were implemented just six days prior to his inauguration.

He called the progress concerning, pointing out that the state was also unaware of the arrival of foreign representatives for a supposed commissioning event.

As per Okpebholo, these actions erode public confidence and will not be permitted during his tenure.

Okpebholo, nevertheless confident that he will keep safeguarding the dignity of Edo, maintain proper procedures, and collaborate with the federal government, customary authorities, and appropriate parties to achieve an open and reliable conclusion to the MOWAA dispute.

In her reply, Minister Musawa praised Edo State's significant role in shaping the country's cultural identity, acknowledging the worldwide importance of Benin's cultural legacy.

She recognized the federal government's knowledge of the disputes concerning MOWAA, referring to the core issue as "an original sin" that needs to be addressed.

Sir, I request that you and your exceptional team collaborate closely with the traditional institution that has been severely mistreated.

We seek a fair approach that honors the past, safeguards established institutions, and enhances Nigeria's international reputation.

"The federal government is ready to listen and back all initiatives aimed at providing enduring relief," she stated.

The gathering included important government officials, such as the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Blessing Agbebaku; Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilo, Esq.; Chief of Staff, Mallam Gani Audu; Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Roland Otaru, SAN; and Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, along with other attendees.
