IN SHORT:A video being shared on social media, which falsely states that Kenya's prime cabinet secretary Musalia Mudavadi has demanded Opiyo Wandayi's resignation, is deceptive. The footage is from March 2021 and was directed at the Uhuru Kenyatta government regarding increases in fuel prices. It has no connection to the 2025 energy crisis.
A 16-second video clipof Kenya's chief cabinet secretary, Musalia Mudavadi, hascirculatedwidely shared on social media in November 2025. This came after president William Ruto's declaration regarding the national electricity distribution company,Kenya Power, was required to limit electricity supply in certain regions.

Opiyo Wandayiis the minister of energy and petroleum.
In the clip, Mudavadi is heard stating: "The Ministry of Energy has let Kenyans down and needs to be held accountable for this difficult situation. They should recognize that it is the average citizen ..." The audio then cuts off.
On 4 November, Ruto saidthe authorities had resorted to daily power cuts, reducing electricity in certain regions from 5 pm to 10 pm to maintain thegrid stable, while urging significant investments to increase capacity.
The energy ministry later movedto ease concerns, stating that Kenya had sufficient resources and the president's remark focused on speeding up power production for industrial growth.

We did a reverse image searchselecting a keyframe from the video clip to identify its source. The findings indicated that the video isnot recentand the caption incorrectly identifies the target and context of Mudavadi's comments.
The original videowas posted on Mudavadi's personal Facebook page on 15 March 2021. At that time, Mudavadi was the head of theAmani National Congressand was referring to the significant rise in fuel costs during the Uhuru Kenyatta government, not the present electricity shortage under Ruto.
In the original video, Mudavadi's critique targeted the previous energy and petroleum ministry in the administration due to the elevated fuel prices. The cabinet secretary for energy during that period was Charles Keter.
Wandayi was sworn into officeOn August 8, 2024. Mudavadi was not criticizing Wandayi or demanding his resignation regarding an event that occurred three years prior to his taking office.
No reliable information has been released by established media outlets or official government sources to support the assertion that Mudavadi has demanded Wandayi's immediate departure.
The footage is a genuine recording of Mudavadi, yet it has been removed from its initial setting, reused, and incorrectly tagged to produce deceptive material.
