The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has launched its 2025 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) with a countrywide initiative covering all 36 states and Abuja, reiterating its dedication to eradicating all types of gender-based violence and enhancing protective measures throughout the nation.

At a press conference held in Abuja on Friday, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, SAN, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, urged the National Assembly to enact laws creating special constituencies for women, emphasizing that rejecting affirmative action constitutes a type of violence against women that must be outlawed.

He stated, "We are seizing this moment to reaffirm our commitment to a Nigeria where violence, discrimination, and harmful traditions are nonexistent, and where women and girls can live without fear. We are taking this chance to urge the National Assembly to enact a law establishing special constituencies for women to enhance their involvement in politics and governance."

The National Human Rights Commission called on government departments, local communities, customary and faith-based leaders, non-governmental organizations, the press, and the public to collaborate in eliminating violence based on gender.

He stated, "Gender-based violence continues to be one of the most widespread human rights issues globally and within our nation. These 16 days serve as a reminder that all forms of violence are intolerable, and every voice, particularly those of the most vulnerable, should be acknowledged, aided, and safeguarded."

He pledged to Nigerians that the Commission will maintain the values of equitable proceedings and neutrality in all its activities, and will not remain passive or let human rights abuses, such as gender-based violence, remain unchecked.

Each grievance will be given proper consideration, and we will make sure those responsible are answerable under the law.

"Merely being aware is not sufficient. We need to transition from promises to actual actions. As one, we can create a Nigeria where women and girls are appreciated, treated with respect, and kept safe," Ojukwu stated, emphasizing that the NHRC will keep working to deliver justice, ensure equitable treatment, and make all offenders answer for their actions as per the law.

The head of the NHRC stated that the 16 Days of Activism, which takes place every year from November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to December 10 (International Human Rights Day), acts as a worldwide appeal to combat gender-based violence (GBV). Since 1991, it has brought together governments, civil society, and activists globally in their pursuit of justice and accountability.

He stated, "Gender-based violence continues to be one of the most widespread human rights issues globally and within our nation. These 16 days serve as a reminder that all forms of violence are intolerable, and every voice, particularly those of the most vulnerable, should be acknowledged, aided, and safeguarded."

He revealed a comprehensive plan of events to be conducted simultaneously throughout the country, including: roadshows with CSOs, NBA, and FIDA on November 25, concluding with official flag-offs by state first ladies, interactions with traditional leaders in various states, and awareness visits to Chief Judges and Federal High Court judges, along with a national human rights day rally on December 10, as well as other activities.

Ojukwu stated, "The initiatives demonstrate our dedication to prevention, responsibility, and enhancing protective measures throughout the nation."

The commemoration this year aligns with the 30th anniversary of the National Human Rights Commission, as the Commission emphasizes the advancements achieved since its founding and identifies areas needing immediate attention.

"For three decades, the NHRC has served as a consistent advocate for justice, respect, and fairness in Nigeria. We have dedicated ourselves to advancing and safeguarding the rights of all individuals, enhancing responsibility, reinforcing democratic principles, and keeping human rights central to the country's growth," Ojukwu said.
