A U.S. House Subcommittee on Africa held a public session on Thursday to examine President Donald Trump's recent reclassification of Nigeria as a Nation of Special Concern.

The session, which started at 5 p.m. in Room 2172 of the Rayburn House Office Building and was broadcast live online, was led by Representative Chris Smith.

Legislators convened to examine the possible effects of the designation, which, if approved by the Senate, might pave the way for penalties against Nigerian officials involved in religious oppression.

The status of the CPC might also restrict specific types of U.S. bilateral aid.

Two groups presented themselves to the subcommittee, including high-ranking officials from the US Department of State and Nigerian religious figures.

During the meeting, Representative Pramila Jayapal cautioned against portraying Nigeria's violence as affecting only a single religious community.

Referencing studies about the causes of conflict in Nigeria's Middle Belt, Jayapal noted that violence had impacted both Christians and Muslims.

She also voiced worry about Trump's reaction to a televised report.

"I'm deeply worried that, the day after President Trump watched a segment on Fox News regarding the persecution of Christians in Nigeria, he vowed to take aggressive action in Nigeria and cut off all aid," she stated, adding that this step could endanger health programs essential for fighting malaria and HIV.

Jayapal questioned authorities about the legal basis for any U.S. military involvement in Nigeria.

"Under what authority would the US military conduct an attack within Nigeria?" she inquired.

In response, Jonathan Pratt, a senior official from the Bureau of African Affairs, stated, "The Secretary of State has instructed us to develop a thorough strategy that utilizes every available resource, including security and the Department of War. This will mainly concentrate on the security we are offering to the Nigerian government and how they are utilizing their resources."

Jayapal asked if the administration had explored diplomatic alternatives prior to Trump's public statements.

Pratt stated that Washington had been involved in Nigeria's security and development matters for a long time.

'They went through a foreign aid assessment, but many of them remain active, and we aim to ensure that we are utilizing them strategically to achieve the best results,' he stated.

Jayapal, in her conclusion, condemned what she referred to as an aggressive stance.

"I simply hope we would adhere to that strategy instead of intimidating and pressuring a nation that holds significant importance for us and the region," she stated.

Referencing former U.S. Ambassador Kelly Currie, she stated, “It's impossible to address issues caused by men with guns by seeking solutions from men with guns.”
