Ogun Gov Mourns Olusegun Awolowo's Passing

The governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, has referred to the passing of Olusegun Awolowo, the grandson of the late Nigerian nationalist and leader, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, as a very significant personal tragedy.

Abiodun characterized the lawyer and former Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council as a true gentleman, a symbol of bravery, and an expert in public service.

Calling his death "a very shocking event," Abiodun said he learned about the passing of the late sage's first grandson in complete disbelief, but will, nevertheless, cherish the memories of their connection.

This information was revealed in a statement released by his media advisor, Kayode Akinmade, on Thursday.

He mentioned that to everyone who knew him, Awolowo was a friendly, very smart, highly flexible, and laid-back individual.

He mentioned he would be deeply missed.

The governor stated, "It is very difficult to accept the news that Segun Awolowo Jr. has passed away, but we fully surrender to the will of the Almighty God, who has summoned him to His presence."

We are profoundly saddened, yet we will find comfort in the outstanding, valuable lessons his life imparted to us, for he was a very cheerful and kind individual.

Awolowo Jr. was born two months following his father's passing, and he experienced sorrow from an early age, yet he overcame the difficulties and emerged as a notable figure in his own right.

Having worked at the law firm of Abayomi Sogbesan & Co. and later at GOK Ajayi & Co. following his admission to the bar in December 1989, he held a position in President Olusegun Obasanjo's government as a Special Assistant for Traditional Institutions, Legal Due Diligence, and Legal Issues.

His tenure as Special Assistant to President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, along with his roles as Secretary for Social Development and Secretary of Transport from 2007 to 2011, and as executive director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council from 2013 to 2021, was without any scandals.

He dedicated his utmost efforts to promoting the interests of Nigeria, and it was no coincidence that he was elected as the President of National Trade Promotion Organisations (TPOs) across ECOWAS member states in July 2021. His time on earth may have been short, but it left a significant mark. I extend my condolences to his beloved wife and children, the Awolowo family, and all Nigerians. May his kind soul find peaceful rest.

The Awolowo family released a statement on Thursday confirming his passing.

The statement partially states, "With deeply heavy hearts, we confirm the death of our cherished husband, father, and grandfather—Olusegun Awolowo."

He was the most extraordinary husband, father, and grandfather the world had ever known — reliable, intelligent, endlessly affectionate, and the unwavering foundation of our family.

A deeply loyal servant of Nigeria, he devoted his life to serving his nation with vision, honesty, enthusiasm, and steadfast dedication. He was a genuine family man, a great friend, an exceptional servant of God, and a profoundly kind individual.

He had deep affection for his family. He cherished his profession. He held a strong love for his nation.

He spent each day with intention, modesty, and a kind heart that influenced all who were acquainted with him.

We are broken by this tragedy, yet deeply thankful for his life, his impact, and the love he gave to each of us. May his kind heart find complete tranquility.
