According to a recent discussion at the Institute of Bankers of Zimbabwe panel held in Cape Town, South Africa, banks are experiencing a significant loss of income from card transactions, although 25% of all electronic payments continue to use them.

In the meantime, banks face challenges in promoting digital cards due to the infrastructure required to support them.

Caroline Masuka, the manager of digital banking channels at CABS, made a strong appeal.

Her appeal points to a significant shortfall: the country cannot update card distribution if the digital wallets that hold them continue to be unavailable.

In the face of difficulties, a plan for what lies ahead is being developed.

Exceptional Mupazviribwo, the digital transformation and innovation manager at ZimSwitch, which handles 75% of the nation's card transactions, views the disruption as a "chance."

He highlights locally developed, card-free options like Zipit and ZEEPAY as proof that the national switch is connecting to tomorrow.

Zipit is a rapid inter-bank money transfer system in Zimbabwe, whereas ZEEPAY offers a safe, economical, and effective method for conducting electronic fund transfers through the Zimswitch Automated Clearing House.

The answer, it appears, is not to mindlessly adhere to worldwide fads but to create a distinct Zimbabwean approach. As Mahoso noted, the card is not disappearing but changing.

The future could involve wearable tech, such as rings, keys, and glasses, that hold the functionality of a card, offering consumers options while bypassing the constraints of traditional plastic.

Zimbabwe's payment system is at a critical crossroads, caught in a plastic dilemma. The card, representing contemporary finance, has turned into an emblem of a transitioning system—too obsolete for the global future, yet too vital to abandon.

Opening the next phase will go beyond technology alone; it will necessitate the unity and coordinated effort that these financial executives are now, at last, advocating for.

The global trend is shifting towards invisible currency, and Zimbabwe needs to choose whether to develop the necessary systems to support it.

"Now, it's about evolution and a forward-thinking approach, as we understand that if we remain complacent, the world will surpass us and we will be discarded," Mupazviribwo stressed.
