PM Harini Urges Ethical and Reliable Journalism

Sri Lanka, November 14 -- Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya mentioned that on digital and social media platforms, certain people spread misleading information for their own benefit, making it urgent to develop professional journalists who understand the duty and obligation of providing truthful and accurate information.

The Prime Minister spoke these words during the certificate presentation event of the MMC ITN Campus of the Independent Television Network (ITN) in Colombo, which honored students who completed the first certificate program organized by the institution, recently held at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute.

The Prime Minister also awarded gold medals to Abhisheka Dunukewela, Dimuthu Nirman, and Kavindya Gimhani, who successfully finished the program and earned top distinctions.

Moving forward, the Prime Minister mentioned,

The ITN Multi Media Campus, created to offer education in the area of multimedia, is a leading educational organization committed to developing the next wave of media professionals, broadcasters, digital artists, and communication experts. Data indicates that worldwide, the creative and digital sectors produce over a trillion dollars annually. These are no longer just numbers; young people in Sri Lanka possess natural creativity, and this program equips them with the skills and support necessary to transform their creativity into a career. Hence, this presents a meaningful chance to enter the industry with appropriate education and training.

In today's environment, where topics like Immersive Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Digital Analytics, and Digital Media Technologies are frequently talked about, studying digital creation is no longer a novel or exclusive pursuit. It has become a crucial field of knowledge that every professional should have at least some familiarity with. Particularly as the current generation is deeply involved in creating content for digital and social media platforms, it's evident that they are highly imaginative and self-assured individuals. The ITN MMC Campus is dedicated to providing students with up-to-date digital technical abilities, hands-on experience, and the necessary expertise to succeed in the fast-changing media sector.

Currently, digital and social media have reached a level that is similar to traditional or mainstream media. This holds true not only on a global scale but also within Sri Lanka. Occupations like content creators and YouTubers are now part of the same category as traditional media professionals. In this context, the key factor we must focus on is the significant influence these media platforms hold. What is truly required are just a few basic needs. Nevertheless, due to the impact and wide reach of these media, both beneficial and adverse effects can occur. Hence, it has become crucial to offer our youth organized and subject-specific education.

Currently, we often talk about misinformation, disinformation, and mal-information. The damage these issues cause to society is clear, as many content creators spread false information for their own benefit. This is why it is crucial to train journalists who are professional and understand the concepts of responsibility and accountability. Organizations like this have a significant duty and responsibility in developing such individuals. I was told that all the courses here aim to support small and medium-sized digital entrepreneurs. In this context, ITN MMC Campus is bravely taking on this responsibility at a time when its commitment is more needed than ever for our country.

Our administration has made significant progress in implementing digital transformation throughout various fields. A primary objective is to convert job seekers into future entrepreneurs. We are striving towards this goal, and your involvement plays a crucial role in reaching it. Hence, it is evident that the future holds great promise for students equipped with education. As innovative individuals able to compete on an international level, you will find countless possibilities. You will not only influence your own future but also assist in shaping the country's future.

The Minister of Health and Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, expressed his gratitude for the work undertaken by the Independent Television Network (ITN), referred to as the "Home for Television Network," in training individuals who can advance with digital technology. For many years, the economy and other areas of the country have progressed at a slow pace, which has impeded national development. As a result, the government aims to meet future goals through an innovative strategy, with digitalization in the media sector playing a crucial role in this endeavor. Thus, digital literacy is essential for citizens to stay connected with the global community.

Deputy Minister of Media, Kaushalya Ariyarathna, stated that in the realm of digital marketing, ads frequently disseminate misleading and outdated beliefs. Hence, creative works should encourage beneficial values like equality, fairness, and gender consciousness. It is equally important to share content on social media while being aware of its authenticity. Simply owning a mobile phone or similar gadget does not qualify someone as a journalist; what truly counts is the correctness and honesty of the material being distributed.

The gathering included Mr. Anil Jayasinghe, the Secretary to the Ministry of Health and Media, Mr. Priyantha Wedamulla, Chairman of ITN, the Board of Directors and faculty members of MMC ITN Campus, along with those who received certificates and their parents.
