ASSIST Software, a Romanian tech firm at the forefront of artificial intelligence and military simulation, was present among senior officials and business leaders at the Conference on Defence Industrial Cooperation between Germany and Romania. Hosted by AHK Romania with the support of the Romanian President, the event held on November 10 emphasized Romania's increasing position as a key technological ally in Europe's defense sector.

As stated by the official AHK Romania announcement, the event focused on critical areas of partnership: purchasing and supply chain collaboration, combined research and development, manufacturing of military hardware, compatibility within NATO and the EU, and collaborative efforts with the Republic of Moldova.

The conversations occurred within the framework of the larger European security environment, particularly following the NATO Summit in The Hague and the EU's Security Action for Europe (SAFE) initiative, which both highlighted the importance of supply-chain resilience and military preparedness.

The Growth of Europe's Military Sector

The gathering occurred amid major changes in European defense spending.

As per the European Defence Agency (EDA, 2025), the overall military spending by EU member nations amounted to €343 billion in 2024, marking a 19% rise compared to the prior year. Expenditure on procurement increased by 39%, and funds allocated for research and development went up by 20%, reaching €13 billion. These numbers show the highest annual growth in defense financing in Europe in many years.

Germany, specifically, has pledged to undertake significant modernization efforts. According to data from NATO (2025), Berlin achieved the 2% of GDP military spending target for the first time, while Aerospace & Defence (2025) indicates that the nation allocated roughly €90.6 billion (2.12% of GDP) to defence in 2024. This funding makes Germany the top military spender in Europe in terms of total value, highlighting fresh prospects for cooperation with reliable regional allies like Romania.

Romania has increased its military spending to exceed NATO's 2% target, with an estimated allocation of 2.5% of GDP as reported by Trade.gov, and is actively upgrading its defense technology and industrial framework (DTIB). Within this framework, Romanian tech firms like ASSIST Software are becoming more crucial in supporting the digital evolution of military capabilities.
