TSV Tittmoning-Chemnitz has brought on board Angelina Melnikova. She is a renowned athlete whose career has intertwined with political matters.

A star Russianathlete will appear for the first time inGermany's gymnasticsBundesliga on Saturday, even though it was labeled as a "champion of terror" by Ukraine.

Gold medalist Angelina Melnikova, considered one of the top gymnasts globally, has joined TSV Tittmoning-Chemnitz for the final two matches of the Bundesliga campaign.

Nevertheless, the action has sparked debate, with the 25-year-old being criticized for taking sides with Russian President Vladimir Putin and supporting his conflict in Ukraine, while also engaging in politics through the ruling United Russia party.

Other Bundesliga teams have questioned the judgment of bringing Melnikova in to assist Chemnitz's championship campaign.

Just sporting considerations," said club coach Tatjana Bachmayer in an interview with okay1. "We didn't aim to provoke anyone, and most importantly, we didn't want to take a political stance. We understand that this might be viewed as controversial. However, what matters to us is unity in sports and global mutual understanding.

Okay1 has also sought a comment from Melnikova through her new club but has not received a response yet.

Germany has previously taken a strict stance towards Russian athletesbeing allowed back into competitions, although this position seems to be becoming less strict. Regarding Melnikova's participation in the Bundesliga, a spokesperson from the German government stated: "There should be no use of sports for Russian politics, and we are also very sure that this is not happening here."

Posing with military symbol

Melnikova was permitted to participate in international competitions as a "neutral" athlete by theInternational Gymnastics Federation(FIG) in March, following three years of participation exclusively in competitions within Russia.

Ukraine, however, has raised concerns about granting Melnikova neutral status and has called on the FIG to reconsider its choice.

In a letter dated April to the leaders of both the FIG and the International Olympic Committee (IOC),Ukrainian sports officialsprovided many instances of their claims that Melnikova breached neutrality guidelines which forbid Russian athletes from expressing support for the conflict.

This involved Melnikova sharing an image on social media featuring the letter "Z," a symbol associated with the Russian military; organizing sports camps for children from military families; and collecting funds for the daughter of a Russian soldier who died in the conflict. As a result, she is included in the Ukrainian military intelligence's "champions of terror" list.

This year, Melnikova previously stood as a candidate for Putin's United Russia party in local election primaries. She was successful but quickly withdrew her nomination, stating it was "challenging to balance politics with sports."

From a sports perspective, that move proved successful: Melnikova secured her second all-around world championship at the world championships in Jakarta, Indonesia, in October, receiving commendation from Putin. "Your victorious performance in the individual all-around is a wonderful gift to your fans, coaches, and mentors," he wrote in a congratulatory message afterward.

Coup for Chemnitz

Following her return to the international scene with two gold medals and a silver in Jakarta, Melnikova's recruitment is considered a significant achievement for Chemnitz. The club aims to break the 13-year dominance of its Bundesliga competitor, MTV Stuttgart.

Safeguarding the decision, the Deutsche Turnliga (DTL) stated on Wednesday to the Ukrainian website Glavcom that it was merely adhering to the FIG's qualification standards, which it expressed confidence in.

We mainly view ourselves as organizers of sports events and as mediators whose role is to offer all athletes a venue for peaceful competition," said Michael Götz, president of the DTL. "We do not have the ability or the authority to look into or assess the political activities of individual athletes.

However, it seems the DTL has changed its stance, as an article posted on its website on October 24 stated that Melnikova's "admission conflicts with the world federation's own neutrality guidelines, which prohibit any military ties."

Okay1 asked the FIG to clarify why it had granted Melnikova neutral status without receiving a response. The German Gymnastics Federation refused to comment, stating it was an issue for the DTL.
