The Telecel Ghana Foundation has introduced the 2025 version of its main health support program, Telecel Homecoming, at Achimota Hospital in Accra, with the goal of assisting patients who are stuck in hospitals because they cannot afford their medical expenses.

Now in its fourteenth year, the annual program is coordinated by the Telecel Ghana Foundation, with assistance from the Medical Reformist, an NGO dedicated to fair healthcare and social progress, aiming to release financially unable patients from different government hospitals within three regional areas of Ghana.

The southern region's waste flows from the Achimota Hospital in Greater Accra, the Gomoa Fetteh Hope Hospital in the Central Region, and the Sogakope District Hospital in the Volta Region are anticipated to affect approximately 80 patients who will be released and reunite with their families before the Christmas season.

Introduced in 2011, Telecel Homecoming is a country-wide charitable effort aimed at addressing hospital financial difficulties, a long-standing issue that prevents numerous Ghanaians from affording necessary medical treatment. The program covers standard admission charges, assistance with childbirth, lab costs, and medicine expenses, along with providing care packages for those who have been discharged.

"Each year, we witness how something as straightforward as paying a bill can transform a life, bring a family together, or reignite hope. Homecoming is about returning dignity to people, as health should never be a privilege but a right for all," said Rita Agyeiwaa Rockson, Head of Foundation, Sustainability and External Communications, at the event.

Hospital staff and patients celebrated when the patients were discharged from their respective rooms. Salome Tetteh Frimpong, the Deputy Chief Nursing Officer at Achimota Hospital, called the program a timely action that reduces stress for both patients and the hospital.

Some patients experience medical recovery but cannot return home due to their inability to pay the bills. This act will greatly help bring joy to patients who are being released and their families who will be reuniting. We will make sure that the donated medical supplies assist more people and communities in our area.

Okaikoi North Municipal Health Director, Dr. Nafisa Maame Alhassan commended Homecoming as a demonstration of private-sector involvement in promoting fairness in healthcare. “With Homecoming, Telecel Ghana is assisting us in achieving one of the six essential elements of strengthening a healthy system. It represents an investment in the health and well-being of individuals both within and outside Okaikoi North who receive quality medical care. The donation and coverage of medical expenses will significantly aid disadvantaged patients and the hospital,” she stated.

The Southern Belt phase represents the initial stage of Homecoming, which will extend through November, with comparable releases scheduled for hospitals in the Northern and Central regions.

Among the patients recently released from the maternity ward is first-time mother Joyce Agorgor, who remained in the hospital for additional days following childbirth because of financial difficulties. She stated, "I am extremely grateful that the Telecel Foundation has helped me so I can return home to my mother and family. I will never forget this day."

Telecel Homecoming is among the most enduring health relief initiatives within Ghana's telecommunications industry and has emerged as a model for how focused corporate social investment can achieve meaningful health outcomes.
