Tense, Truthful Interview Session

It was a highly contentious confirmation hearing that, by the end, left numerous scars on both the nominee and the Speaker.

The candidate for Chief Justice (CJ), Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, responded to inquiries from committee members, with some of his replies prompting reflection among Ghanaians.

The hostility surrounding the process was not surprising; the Minority argued that as there were procedures to be completed before the court regarding the case of the dismissed former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, the vetting should not take place until the matters were resolved.

The minority, which was supposed to have its voice heard, was loudly being refused that opportunity, leading many to question if the Majority Leader was acting disruptively as he pushed forward with this initiative.

The contentious meeting included several parts, perhaps the most alarming being the nominee's sentencing of Ataa Ayi to 70 years.

If the intention was to make a light-hearted comment, it didn't come across that way; the nominee stated he sentenced the offender to a seventy-year prison term so he wouldn't be released to confront him and to trouble his family. By the time the hardened criminal exited the prison, he would have already been gone.

One day following the announcement, it offered an intriguing but concerning subject for media discussions.

Was the prisoner given a harsh and corrective prison sentence to safeguard the nominee's family, or was it simply a routine process for individuals who committed crimes similar to those of Ataa Ayi?

Maybe the candidate could have approached the topic in another way, his response providing interested Ghanaians with plenty of material to expose his weaknesses.

Ghanaians, frequently remembering events through the internet, which is often claimed to never forget, were unable to avoid discussing how a bar group aligned with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) mentioned the creation of an alternative organization to the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) when it addressed the nominee to offer congratulations on his appointment as Acting Chief Justice.

The group seeks a Supreme Court ruling on whether the GBA should be the sole representative body for the legal profession. Many voiced concerns about how, in effect, he guided the emerging group on its course of action.

His non-verbal cues during the meeting with the esteemed scholars indicated his willingness to support the dismantling of the GBA's monopoly.

As an official body, the GBA was labeled as a pro-New Patriotic Party (NPP) group by NDC factions, and therefore, any actions needed to create an opposing organization must be given the required support. With a cooperative Chief Justice presiding, it won't take long before such a competing group is established.

Regarding the Speaker, we are taken aback that he identified an issue with the way the Minority managed the session before deciding to leave.

Here is a speaker who, during the time Justice Gertrude Torkornoo was Chief Justice and made specific decisions, voiced disappointment and explicitly stated that the Judiciary was working together with the Executive to limit the Legislature's power.

Now, he has chosen to offer an apology to a CJ nominee since the Minority shared their views in accordance with Parliament's procedures. Circumstances have evolved.
