A pioneering 360° fulldome documentary, resulting from a special Zimbabwean-Welsh partnership, will have its global debut tomorrow at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), the leading documentary event worldwide.
Named The Rift, the six-minute immersive film will be presented inside the ARTIS-Planetarium, a twenty-meter dome located at the ARTIS Amsterdam Royal Zoo.
It is among the few works selected for the renowned IDFA DocLab Competition for Immersive Non-Fiction and will also be part of the DocLab Exhibition.
The movie resulted from an effort known as XR Labs, which united the Welsh immersive arts studio 4Pi Productions with organizations based in Harare: the media company Matamba Film Labs and the dance group AfriKera Arts Trust.
Funded by the British Council's International Collaboration Programme, the initiative sought to support female artists by utilizing advanced extended reality (XR) narrative techniques.
Shot over three weeks in various locations throughout Zimbabwe, The Rift features water as a connecting theme. It combines strong modern dance and music to address urgent topics like water availability, fast fashion, and plastic waste.
The performance includes four dancers—Delvin Pikani, Sasha Kakono, Ngonizashe Kamudyariwa, and Dazel Matake—who execute a unified dance routine in various environments such as thick forests, wide open fields, city scenes, and old ruins.
An official statement characterized the visual tapestry: “Lines between constructed spaces and natural formations become indistinct, with dancers uniting all these locations and eras into one unified entity.”
The audio features a poem from Rox Mathazia (Sister Xapa) and a unique remix of “Mvura” by singer Mary Anibal.

The main production team consisted of Janire Najera and Matt Wright as directors and filmmakers; Soukaina M-L Edom as the lead choreographer; Victor Peturo as assistant choreographer; producers Siza Mukwedini and Kuda Makuzwa (Zimbabwe) and Lauren James (Wales); studio filmmaker Rhys Davies; and Jamie Wilson as the compositor.
The initiative also offered instruction to a group of female artists, known as 'The Future Femmes,' organized by Matamba Film Labs.
The statement mentioned that the participants created a VR documentary showcasing the project's behind-the-scenes aspects, enhancing their skills in immersive storytelling techniques.
Considering the partnership, Najera shared with IndependentXtra that collaborating with the Zimbabwean group was an extremely rewarding encounter.
She remarked, 'Their method of dealing with the bureaucratic obstacles they encountered, marked by openness, patience, and compassion, made a long-lasting impact.'
Working with Afrikera Arts Trust was particularly fulfilling; their choreographers and dancers are outstanding and reacted naturally to every location... It was an honor to assist their growth and see them taking charge of the creative process.
Mukwedini emphasized the advantageous opportunities for the local industry.
"The distinct benefits are that the production quality is significantly higher, and the skill-sharing between both sides is truly remarkable. Now, we have access to much more recent markets and audiences that we previously had difficulty reaching," she said.
Collaborating with 4Pi Productions offered valuable knowledge that is currently shaping Zimbabwe's Film Strategy, especially regarding global collaborations and production procedures.
Edom shared a strong enthusiasm for upcoming global partnerships.
"It indicates that we are not operating in isolation and that others are engaged with our efforts. In a world where financial support is decreasing, it's beneficial to unite and work together; we can truly enhance the industry," she stated.
The event takes place between November 13 and 24 in different locations throughout Amsterdam, featuring approximately 300 films.
An extra showing of The Rift will take place on the night of November 18 at the ARTIS-Planetarium.
