Uganda has made substantial progress in the fight against HIV, showing notable reductions in infection rates, new cases, and deaths from AIDS, yet the Uganda AIDS Commission (UAC) has raised alarms about growing issues among youth and ongoing transmission from mothers to children, which could hinder this progress.

Speaking to the media before the National HIV Symposium and World AIDS Day, UAC Director General Nelson Musoba stated that Uganda is "winning the battle against HIV and AIDS," though it needs renewed dedication to keep up the progress.

Uganda's Advancement: Infection Rate Reduced to 4.9%

New national statistics from the Ministry of Health indicate:

Current HIV infection rate: 4.9%, a decrease from 18% during the 1980s and 1990s.

New cases: decreased to 37,000 in 2024, compared to 94,000 in 2010.

AIDS-related fatalities: decreased to 20,000, down from 54,000 in 2010.

Approximately 1.5 million individuals are living with HIV, of whom 1.3 million are receiving treatment.

Musoba acknowledged the government's leadership, collaborators, and unified community efforts as responsible for the advancements.

Concerning Patterns: Young People in Significant Danger

Although there has been advancement, individuals between the ages of 15 and 25 continue to be the group most impacted.

Close to 70% of new infections are found within this age group.

Four of the five infected young individuals are females or young women.

Musoba stated that false information and insufficient understanding of HIV remain factors that put young people at risk.

Numerous young individuals are unaware of the fundamentals of HIV spread. Certain people still think that HIV can be contracted by sharing cups or sitting beside someone. However, in Uganda, HIV is mainly transmitted through sexual contact.

He pointed out significant risk factors contributing to infections in young people:

Multiple sexual partners

Unreliable or absence of condom usage

Transactional sex

Economic vulnerability

Limited bargaining ability of girls and young women

Setback: High Rates of Transmission from Mother to Child Remain a Problem

Uganda reported 4,700 newborns testing positive for HIV in 2024, even though proven prevention methods are accessible.

"This must not be occurring," Musoba emphasized.

The resources are available. No infant should be born with HIV.

Results for the 95-95-95 Targets

Uganda's position in 2024:

Testing (first 95): 94%

On therapy (second 95): 90%

Third 95: 96% viral suppression

Although the nation is near meeting global objectives, the rate of treatment adoption—especially among men and certain young people—still presents a challenge.

The annual National HIV and AIDS Symposium will be held at Mbarara University of Science and Technology, with the following theme:

Involve regular Ugandans in gaining knowledge about HIV research

Dr. Musoba called on families, communities, educators, cultural figures, and all citizens of Uganda to remain dedicated:

He mentioned that the stigma present in homes and schools still prevents people from following the guidelines, particularly among younger individuals.
