The Met Officeissued two 'danger to life' amber rain alerts for areas in central England and South Wales today, both valid from 12pm until midnight.
A broader and extended yellow rain alert is also in effect across much of southern England and the Midlands, running from 6am tomorrow until 6am on Saturday.
Hurricane Claudia was given its name inSpain, where it is currently impacting western Iberia and the Canary Islands, causing extended periods of heavy rainfall and powerful easterly winds in the UK.
A map released by the Meteorological Office indicates the regions that will experience heavy rainfall in central and southern England.
It is claimed that Claudia does not possess the 'unique spiral' seen in earlier storms, and its slow movement is expected to result in extended periods of intense rainfall.
Tomorrow is expected to begin with light but rainy conditions across most of England and Wales, although Northern Ireland and Scotland will experience a drier morning.
South Wales is expected to experience the highest rainfall, with 50mm to 75mm (3in) anticipated across the amber alert zone – and 100mm (4in) to 150mm (6in) on certain elevated areas.
Central England under the amber warning is forecast to receive between 40mm (1.6in) and 60mm (2.4in) of rainfall. Certain regions in the East Midlands, western England, and elevated areas in Wales within this zone may experience approximately 80mm (3.1in).
Meteorologists warned that any travel delays might be worsened by powerful east winds, with wind speeds reaching 50 to 60 mph in the afternoon and evening.
Reaching up to 70mph is feasible in certain open hilltops and coastal areas, while thunderstorms are anticipated later tomorrow during the afternoon and evening.
The alert for central England warns that 'rapidly moving or deep floodwater is expected, posing a risk to lives', and that 'residences and commercial properties may be submerged, leading to damage in certain structures'.
It also alerts to 'spraying and flooding causing challenging driving situations and certain road closures' and a 'high likelihood that some areas will be isolated due to flooded roads'.
Additionally, the alert mentions that 'train and bus services may experience delays and some cancellations,' while 'power outages and the disruption of other services for certain homes and businesses are possible.'
The amber alert for Wales is comparable, but also mentions: 'Potential loss of power and other critical services, including gas, water, or mobile phone connections, could occur.'
The Environment Agency has cautioned that local flooding could occur due to rivers and runoff.
Over 20 flood warnings and 35 flood alerts have been issued throughout England.
Natural Resources Wales has issued eight flood alerts, while the Scottish Environment Protection Agency has activated two flood warnings and seven flood alerts.
It occurs even though the Environment Agency has issued a warning that England will face extensive drought conditions following a dry spring and summer in 2025.
The drought is considered to have ended only after water levels have been completely restored. England has experienced below-average rainfall for eight of the past ten months this year, with just January and September recording above-average precipitation.
The nation has only received 83 percent of the typical rainfall from January through October, and experienced the driest spring in 132 years along with the hottest summer ever recorded.
Although there has been recent rain, the Environment Agency stated that the situation is still 'delicate'.
And if the winter experiences less rainfall than usual, a significant portion or even the entire country could face drought conditions by next spring, leading to restrictions on water usage, impacts on agriculture and wildlife, and an increased risk of wildfires as summer advances.
Dry weather increases the likelihood of sudden flooding when rain occurs, as dry soil has difficulty absorbing intense rainfall, causing water to flow over the surface and lead to flood conditions.
Helen Wakeham, director of water at the Environment Agency, stated: 'A drought is expected next year, unless there is continuous rain during the winter.'
The intensity of the drought will be influenced by both the weather conditions and the measures we implement during the winter after such a dry year.
The general population has done well by using slightly less water this summer and adhering to the regulations in certain areas of the country.
I encourage individuals to maintain maximum efficiency in their water usage this winter – even when it is raining. Our wildlife, rivers, and public water supplies rely on this.
If the UK experiences a typical level of precipitation during the winter months, all regions across the country are expected to be in a normal or improving state by March 2026, except for certain areas in Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire that will continue to face extended dry weather.
Will Lang, the head meteorologist at the Met Office, stated: 'Although it's not feasible to accurately predict the weather for the next three months, the likelihood of a dry spell is greater than usual.
An average three-month period for precipitation remains the most probable situation.
It is crucial to recognize that precipitation levels in England can differ, meaning some areas might experience increased rain, while others receive less, potentially offering minimal respite from persistent dry weather.
Water official Emma Hardy stated that the Government will keep collaborating with the National Drought Group and water providers to ensure availability of supplies for communities throughout the nation.
Global warming indicates that we can expect more regular, intense dry spells and flooding in the coming years.
"That's why this administration is implementing firm measures to ensure our sustained water security, involving the construction of nine new reservoirs and funding for new pipelines to minimize leaks," she stated.
