UKZN Unveils State-of-the-Art Manufacturing Hub for Aerospace Advancement
South Africa's aerospace engineering sector experienced notable advancement this week as the advanced manufacturing facility was officially opened, alongside the new headquarters of the Aerospace Systems Research Institute (ASRI) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN).
Unveiled by Dr Mlungisi Cele, the Director-General of the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), on Tuesday, this advanced center marks a key move in enhancing the nation's ability to compete globally in the field of innovation.
Cele emphasized the importance of strategic government, higher education, and industry partnerships in meeting national goals.
He highlighted that the ASRI and advanced manufacturing projects reinforced the connection between research excellence and practical industry use — a fundamental aspect of the department's goal for a more innovative, accessible, and eco-friendly economy.
"Our economy requires an immediate influx of skilled engineers, scientists, and innovators who can boost productivity, enhance competitiveness, and promote inclusive growth. Institutions such as this one are essential in addressing this demand. They offer students practical training with advanced technologies, while encouraging creativity and problem-solving abilities that are key to our country's future," he stated.
He highlighted additive manufacturing, robotics, and advanced materials as key fields for enhancing capabilities.
Cele mentioned that the DSTI's Science, Technology and Innovation Decadal Plan highlighted the importance of encouraging localization and technology-based manufacturing, as well as preparing young people with the necessary skills and prospects for the fourth industrial revolution.
ASRI, initially established in 2009 as the Aerospace Systems Research Group, was officially recognized as an institute under the School of Engineering at UKZN in 2022.
Its goal is to position itself as a leading global hub for research and development in aerospace propulsion.
ASRI is dedicated to boosting South Africa's space engineering sector and developing expertise in aerospace propulsion engineering.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Head of the College of Agriculture, Engineering, and Science at UKZN, Professor Fhatuwani Mudau, thanked the DSTI for their confidence in the university.
He pledged that the funding would be used to transform the university into a driver of change, establishing ASRI as a benchmark and pioneer in promoting science and enhancing capabilities across the nation.
Mudau expressed his enthusiasm about the national acclaim that UKZN has received due to ASRI's work in rocket science.
He urged the young engineers employed at ASRI and the advanced manufacturing plant to make the most of the chance.
Aerospace Engineering professor at UKZN, Glen Snedden, stated that the updated office facilities and production capacity signified a clear dedication to the initiative, which was both supportive and encouraging for the engineers and students.
ASRI provides advanced academic programs for talented students across the nation and is currently collaborating with graduates from Stellenbosch University, the Universities of Pretoria and the Witwatersrand, along with UKZN.
Snedden mentioned that the next phase would involve relocating to a recently constructed building on an unused area of the university campus.
"This would involve creating a local testing capability for the static firing of our engines, and, with additional progress, we hope to jointly develop a production site, offices, lecture halls, and an outreach center, all centered on aerospace education and research. If everything proceeds as planned, we aim to launch a suborbital rocket into space within five years and move towards orbital launches within a decade," he concluded.
The newly established ASRI offices include, among other amenities, a conference room equipped with video conferencing features, a smaller space for meetings, and a high-level computing system designed for simulation tasks.
