Organizations that manage media rights have contacted officials regarding the vanishing of independent journalist Hans Achomba, who disappeared following police interrogation about his coverage of the election.

We urge the authorities to conduct prompt inquiries to find out his location.
The organizations listed below express our serious worry regarding the disappearance of freelance journalist Hans Achomba since November 5, 2025. As of now, his location is still unknown. We call on the police to conduct an investigation and determine his whereabouts as soon as possible.
Prior to his disappearance, Achomba was interrogated by the police on Monday, November 3, regarding his journalism and social media activity leading up to the October 12 elections in Cameroon. After the elections, demonstrations broke out, leading to significant violence, with at least four individuals reportedly killed by security forces, dozens injured, and hundreds more detained nationwide, as reported by Human Rights Watch.
On November 3, when he was questioned by the police, it is reported that they also took away Achomba's National Identity Card and Passport. Achomba was scheduled to return to the Bamenda Police Station with his attorney on November 6 at 10:00 am. Nevertheless, he did not show up at the station. His legal representative mentioned that there was an attempt to confirm whether he was in police custody, but the authorities stated that he had not been arrested. Attempts by his family, coworkers, and his lawyer to find out where he was have not been successful.
Although it remains uncertain if Achomba's vanishing is connected to his job, these events highlight significant worries regarding the security of journalists and the condition of press freedom in Cameroon.
In 2017, Achomba was also arrested and held for several months, facing charges including involvement in hostility toward the nation, secession, spreading false information, rebellion, inciting civil conflict, and being involved in terrorist activities. He had been observed talking to a cyclist regarding his presence on the streets during a period of protests, strikes, and closures in the country's English-speaking areas. He was eventually released in September 2017 when the office of President Paul Biya stated that Cameroon was ceasing criminal actions against those detained during the unrest.
We remain committed to supporting the journalists and media professionals in Cameroon, and we wish for Achomba's safe return.
