Victims of Illegal Demolition Seek Justice in Plateau Community

Residents whose homes were destroyed in the Tudun Wada Community within the Shendam Local Government Area of Plateau State have blamed members of the Fuanter family for seizing the contested land in the region.

Conflict arose when the Fuanter family arrived to lay the groundwork for a new structure, which they strongly opposed.

LEADERSHIP states that the police instructed both sides to keep things as they were. However, on October 22 and 24, youths, supported by the Police, entered the community and destroyed all the houses there.

The victims also alleged that Festus Fuanter, former APC Deputy Secretary and current Board chairman of the National Teachers' Institute (NTI), was responsible for the demolition that took place.

In a phone conversation with our reporter, the Board Chairman refuted the claim, stating he was not responsible for the destruction of the homes.

In the same way, the police had previously informed reporters that they were aware of the damage but would verify it from the location.

However, the victims of the destroyed homes spoke at a press conference in Jos, after tensions increased in the region, stating that the demolition conducted by the youths and the police was unlawful, as the case is still under consideration in the Court of Appeal in Jos.

Yusuf Isa, one of the individuals affected by the demolition, who addressed the press conference, informed reporters that they have owned and constructed their homes since 2013, and all paperwork concerning the land is in their possession.

He stated, "Our homes and assets valued at millions of naira were destroyed during the invasion. We strongly denounce this action. The Pearson who sold the land to the community residents, Alh. Muhammed Luba, two decades ago has been arrested and is currently being held at Shendam police station, despite his health issues."

Our homes were destroyed, and now they want to seize the land from us because we are considered insignificant by the police.

We are reaching out to the National Assembly and other appropriate authorities for assistance, as we have been left without a home. We are also appealing to the Inspector General of Police to initiate an investigation into the event in Shendam to determine the extent of the Plateau State Police Command's involvement in the unlawful entry and destruction of our homes, ensuring that justice is served.

We are certain that Nigeria has not yet become a banana republic where only the strongest thrive. We are governed by the law. The rule of law is strongly respected. Individuals in positions of power within the country are not above the law, but rather subject to it.

"They are required not only to follow the law but also to appear to do so. They should not be permitted to take justice into their own hands and escape with it. They must be held accountable, just like any other Nigerian. They need to explain their actions regardless of their status in society," he said.
