War Rages On - US Ready to Sanction Rapid Support Forces
The Sudanese military reported that it successfully stopped a drone assault targeting the Merowe Dam and the town of the same name, including its airport. The 19th Infantry Division of the SAF (Sudan Armed Forces) stated in a release that a group of drones launched by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) was stopped during the early hours of November 13. These drones were aimed at attacking an army base, Merowe airport, and the Merowe Dam.
Merowe, a key location in northern Sudan, features an airport that serves both military and civilian needs, along with the Merowe Dam, one of the country's biggest dams. The dam's hydroelectric power station has been attacked several times, leading to electricity shortages in various towns.
The military also stated that it had successfully stopped an assault by the Rapid Support Forces on the Babanusa military base located in West Kordofan State. Although the RSF had left Babanusa in recent months, it continued to maintain a blockade of the city, which had been ongoing since January 2024.
After the RSF took control of El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur (refer to Fides, 27/10/2025), the fighting moved to Kordofan and other parts of Sudan, with foreign entities backing either the SAF or the RSF (refer to Fides, 7/11/2025).
In the meantime, Marco Rubio, the US Secretary of State and acting National Security Advisor, addressed reporters following a G7 meeting in Canada regarding the RSF's international donors.
"I believe action must be taken to halt the flow of weapons and support that the RSF is receiving as it keeps advancing," Rubio stated, noting that the assistance was "undoubtedly" coming from outside Sudan. Rubio made a distinction between the nations funding the weapons and those that "permit their territory to be used for transporting and shipping the weapons." This was an obvious allusion, without explicitly mentioning them, to the United Arab Emirates, which funds the RSF, along with Puntland (an autonomous region in Somalia) and Libya, which aid in the movement of weapons, mercenaries, and supplies for Sudanese militias. Rubio also mentioned that the RSF has committed war crimes, including massacres and large-scale sexual assaults, and indicated that Washington could designate them as a terrorist group.
The Archbishop of Juba, Cardinal Stephen Ameyu Martin Mulla, spoke about the conflict in Sudan and South Sudan during his opening speech to the plenary assembly of the Sudan's Catholic Bishops' Conference (SCBC), which encompasses bishops from both Sudan and South Sudan, on November 10 in Malakal, South Sudan. "The people of Sudan and South Sudan are enduring unimaginable suffering, displacement, loss of life, destruction of churches and property, and a humanitarian crisis of historic proportions," stated the Cardinal, praising the Catholic community and the local population for their reaction to this disaster. "In the face of these challenges, the dioceses have shown strength, offering shelter, food, and spiritual support through charities and other groups," he highlighted.
