•Whizzbeat, The Kazez discuss working together on their new single
Nigerian producer-artist WhizzBeat and Afrobeats group The Kazez are gaining attention with their new track, "My Somebody." In this special interview with ADERONKE ADESANYA, they discuss how a single beat inspired the song and how their innate chemistry helped bring the record to life.
What inspired the concept behind your new track "My Somebody," and how did you two collaborate to bring it to life?
The kazez: Regarding inspiration, it was truly the rhythm that resonated with us. Whizzbeat understands how to do that. We simply allowed the beat to guide us and we followed. One aspect that was significant to us was wanting this song to be easy to consume, featuring enhanced lyrics while remaining a very catchy track.
Whizzbeat: I had the track and I was certain The Kazez were the ones who could truly capture that atmosphere, so I reached out to them and shared the beat along with my desire to release new music. It all came together smoothly; they loved it and the rest is history!
What do you believe is the effect of being a self-reliant producer and artist on your professional journey and creative development?
Whizzbeat: As an independent producer, it has allowed me to stay disciplined and concentrate on the essential aspects at the appropriate moments. With no label support and everything else, I can't afford to be lazy or make incorrect choices about my music. So, yes, it has aided me in making more informed decisions and staying disciplined.
What are some of the major difficulties you encounter as a solo musician and how do you deal with them?
Whizzbeat: I believe every independent artist encounters only one main obstacle, which is funding, because it's wild these days with the amount of money required to promote your talent and without any label support. So yeah, it's mostly about finances, but still, I'm grateful to God for being able to accomplish what I can with what I have! Praise be to God for that.
What was your understanding of the song's lyrics and feelings, and how did you incorporate that into the production?
Whizzbeat: The kazez are highly skilled in their craft, among the top individuals in Nigeria, to be honest. Their lyrics and performance motivated me to enhance the production even further than it was when I initially sent it to them.
How do you, as creators, maintain your drive and creativity to produce new music, and what can listeners look forward to in your upcoming works?
We are individuals who have a strong passion for our work. We don't create music solely for financial gain or recognition; even without those elements, we would still joyfully make music, even if it's just for our own enjoyment, and this dedication helps sustain our motivation and creativity, resulting in high-quality output.
What guidance would you offer to up-and-coming musicians who want to work with you?
Whizzbeat: I'm not easily impressed when it comes to music, and they need to deliver their best. Excellence is the key for me. So, once they understand what they're doing musically, we can work together and create great tracks.
How do you believe the music industry has evolved since you began your career, and what guidance would you offer to upcoming artists joining the field?
The Kazez: We are living in the digital era now, where anything is achievable. It's significantly different from when we began years back. There are no gatekeepers or individuals who control your fate. All you need to do now is continue doing what you do and remain consistent, and your life can change dramatically overnight.
In what ways has collaborating on "My Somebody" influenced your professional and personal connection, and what have you gained from one another?
The kazez: We have several incredible songs together. This is just one of them. Whizzbeat is a very good friend of ours, so collaborating has always been straightforward. Our chemistry consistently creates music that stands the test of time. We released this track around the time we were searching for a new apartment and relocating, and you know how hectic that can be in Lagos. It definitely impacted our communication and availability, but Whizzbeat was extremely patient and supportive. He's a true G.
What do you believe distinguishes you as a producer, and how do you handle collaboration with various artists?
Whizzbeat: Honestly, I believe my unique sound is what makes me stand out, and I don't really try to sound like anyone else. When working with artists, I aim to understand their vision and enhance it, regardless of who I'm collaborating with, as each artist has their own way of approaching their music.
Lately, Jon Bellion left a comment on your Instagram post in the video where you tagged him. How did it make you feel to be acknowledged by a global artist?
Whizzbeat: Honestly, I can't even describe how that impacted me! It simply made me realize I was on the right track and I had to continue because for someone with such musical talent to leave a comment in all caps on my page? That was mind-blowing for me! I still can't wrap my head around it! But I'm thankful to God for supporting me throughout my musical journey. All the credit goes to Him.
What do you believe are the essential components of a productive partnership?
The Kazez: Energy holds significant importance. We are not in favor of forced collaborations or relationships. We believe that if the energy is not correct, it affects the song and we can sense that, which is something we would not want to be linked with.
