The governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, has announced Monday as a day dedicated to fasting and prayer aimed at promoting peace and development within the state and the entire country.
The statement was delivered in a televised speech broadcast by Channels Television on Saturday.
The governor's statement follows a surge in assaults on schools and places of worship throughout northern Nigeria.
In Kwara State, educational institutions were shut down in four local government areas following a church assault that resulted in at least two congregants losing their lives and several others being taken captive.
In Kebbi State, 25 female students were taken from a residential school in Maga, with a vice-principal losing their life. At the same time, in Niger State, over 300 children and 12 educators were seized from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri in a large-scale abduction.
Speaking to the residents, Zulum introduced himself as "not only your governor but a fellow citizen with a strong sense of patriotism" and called for unity in maintaining peace.
"For the last 15 years, Borno State has been under international attention due to the Boko Haram conflict. This impacted all parts of our community, forcing many people to leave their homes and affecting their means of living," he stated.
Zulum praised the endurance of the Borno community and their assistance to law enforcement agencies.
Through God's will, we managed to endure those challenging times of rebellion by coming together as one, setting aside differences in ethnicity, religion, and regionalism.
"We stood united with our military and other security organizations to face the shared threat, which sought to disrupt our country, the Northeast, and the entire nation," he further stated.
He also emphasized the advancements in farming, pointing out that "the relative peace achieved in the state has led to a hopeful harvest for this year's agricultural season."
Farmers have managed to grow their crops, which are anticipated to support them for the following one or two years. The government continues to be dedicated to assisting farmers with supplies and agricultural chemicals to enable farming throughout the year and achieve food self-sufficiency.
Although recognizing occasional assaults, the governor encouraged residents to stay strong.
"Your perseverance has served as a source of motivation and power for me and the whole administration. Being individuals of faith, we hold the belief that our security approaches should be supported by prayers," he stated.
Zulum urged every resident, irrespective of their religion, to join the day of fasting and prayer.
I officially announce Monday, November 24th, 2025, as a state-wide day of fasting and prayer aimed at bringing back peace to Borno State and the nation as a whole.
"On this day, I appeal to all residents of Borno State, irrespective of their religion, to come together in prayer for the enduring peace and development of our cherished state and Nigeria. Therefore, let us commit ourselves to continuous prayers, asking the Almighty God for His compassion," he requested.
He pledged that his government would keep "prioritizing the well-being of our security personnel, encouraging grassroots monitoring efforts, and seeking discussions whenever feasible without endangering the nation's stability or the protection of its citizens."
Zulum's appeal comes after a comparable state-wide day of fasting and prayer in May 2025, which he personally guided in Rann, Kala Balge Local Government Area — a community severely affected by Boko Haram and ISWAP militants.
